I've searched through the thread, and couldn't find answers to two questions. I'm considering adding a sub to my system,[1] started looking at some $300-$500 bargains, and based on several recommendations across multiple sites, have narrowed it down (and upped my ante) to SVS [SB|PB]-1000, HSU VTF-1 or VTF-2. Some other brands look appealing, but comparing stats and features, though the SVS SB-1000 would currently be a bargain, the VTF-1 (currently marked down for St. Patrick's Day) seems comparable in price and superior in flexibility.

But that VTF-2 has lower extension (down to 17Hz or so), leading me to consider upping my ante even further for "the best sub you can afford."

Questions for those with either of these models:

1. With the proper configuration and placement in a room (mine's 25'x18'x9', not counting the kitchen extension off to the side of the rear of the room, which is a dining area), could a VTF-1 reach down below its rated 23-ish Hz floor?

2. If I bought a VTF-1 or VTF-2, could I purchase the other later (e.g. a dual sub setup with VTF-1 and VTF-2) and they would complement each other? I know people say you can mix and match comparable subs with relative success, I imagine that two very similar models from the same maker with the versatility Hsu offers could be powerful. E.g. the VTF-2 in 1-port mode reaching down to 18ish Hz, and a VTF-1 in 2-port mode providing stronger mid-bass from another position closer to the viewer....

Anecdotes, thoughts, and suggestions welcome with my sincere thanks. As far as buying, I think I'm sold on Hsu even though SVS offers a free audition and return shipping. So many people recommending Hsu, several shining reviews on CNet and Widescreen Review,... seems a pretty reliable purchase decision.

[1] Bose 401s which go down comforbably to about 80Hz, with some support down to 30Hz, Bose 301 Series III for surround, Yamaha NS-C444 for center, which seems capable of 80Hz and up. AVR is a Yamaha RX-V775.

After talking with Kevin at Hsu this evening, and getting some reasoned explanation about their products, I ordered a VTF-2. Can't wait to get it in and running, as I know it will surpass the Martin Logan Dynamo 500 that I've been "borrowing" from Best Buy to test a sub in my current setup.

Oh boy is this a fun addition. And I just got a new 4K master release of JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH with Bernard Herrmann's score on an isolated track. He used 4 electric organs and a pipe organ for the score, particularly the "Atlantis" sequence - just itching to put that on, good 'n loud.

The test CD is a neat tool to set it, but the downward sweep identified a little shortfall at around 130Hz from the 401s, so I'm playing with setting the crossover at 120 (give the mains a break on the low bass) or 160 (give them a REAL break, and yes I can hear some improvement in some media).

Can anyone tell me what they listen for in tracks 3-5 of the Hsu/BAS test disc? Just general fidelity? I know the Verdi piece starts off with great guns, an explosion of instruments.

Congrats Billy I'm selling my sub to a friend and getting either the VTF-15H MK2 or the VTF-3 MK5 HP. I want the 15H of course as long as the wife is cool... I think she is.

Here is the VTF2 MK4s replacement. It is seriously a beast in terms of output and pressurizing the room. My wife could feel the bed shaking upstairs so something was done right LOL.

Congrats Steve, unfortunately I can not see your pic since our work web filters blocks photobucket web site. Glad I was able to help you make your decision.

After a few painful days of researching subwoofer's i finally pulled the trigger on the HSU VTF3-MK5. Hopefully i made a good choice, i am just glad the process is over. Its not easy buying something you cant listen to first, all i could do was read a bunch of reviews and/or feedback from owners of the various subwoofers at this price point. In the end, i went with the HSU because it had more horse power then the SVS pb 2000 (nearly equal to pc12 plus) and it was on sale for July 4th (total with shipping only came to $50 more then the svs pb-2000). I'm just relieved the process is over, i hate the internal struggle i go through when I buy equipment like this. Not sure if any of you watch the big bang theory but i'm like Sheldon in the episode when he is trying to choose between the xbox one & the ps4.

My ED A2-300 is having amp issues, and I am considering buying a HSU VTF2 MK4 to replace it. It's currently on sale for $520, but I'm not sure how much they charge for shipping. Can anybody give me some opinions on this particular sub or other subs in the $500 range?

If you look at this page it states $67.00 for shipping.

Well, I decided to buy the HSU VTF-2 MK4 instead of trying to fix the ED A2-300. I hope somebody will buy it "as is" for a project sub, but it doesn't seem likely. I'm hoping the HSU is a nice step up from the ed, and lasts a while longer.

If it helps, I've had my VTF-2 a year or so, and it's still wowing me. I was watching remastered(?) ST: TNG episodes on Netflix this week and there was a quite pleasing warp drive rumble from the 1701-D gliding by ... audio ecstasy!

Thanks! It will be interesting to compare the performance/sound quality of the two subs. The A2-300 was great for movies, and could slam while playing rap, but didn't blend very well for other music. Time to rediscover some of my concert vids and favorite films. The plane crash scene in Fight Club is one of my personal favorites.
