Default My Open Box Home Theater

Here is a glimpse of my two humble HTs. The main theater is located in a bedroom/game room and is 17'X15' with vaulted ceilings.

Projection wall with black felt

Dual screen

There is some basic room treatments to enhance contrast and proper speaker placement for Dolby PLIIz. I found this to work well in this room due to the fact that my seating is up against the back wall. The equipment has recently been upgraded to the tune of a new receiver, Denon AVR-790 from a Sony STR-DG910, and 1080p projector. I also just bought, from a fellow forum member , a used 106" Da-Lite High Power Screen to replace the 92" pull down for gaming and sports.
In the living room theater things are laid out with much more WAF involved. I have a high lumen projector so that we can watch with a lot less light control.

Living room on Sunday

I have posted list my equipment in the photos so I won't bother you with all that again. Please feel free to make any suggestions or comments for improvement or anything else that screams "what the heck is that". I'm always looking for ways to better my movie watch experience.
By the way the reason I call them open box theaters is about 95% of the equipment came from open box specials or is gently used, enjoy.

Nice work. Looking at the screen with that backyard in the background must be sweet.

That's one of the nice parts about high lumen projectors, sports not in the dark. By the way, that is a waterfall next to the pool, the wife and I built that our selves. One of the rocks weighed about 1200lbs, every time I look at it my back starts to hurt .

Ready for the Rango!

But I will have to wait for tomorrow. Wife wants to watch Battle: Los Angeles. Can't argue with that much LFE.

Nice setup. I bought my Mits 6500 open box from BB too. As soon as I get into my new place I am going to do a dual screen setup like yours.

Thanks for the compliment. The dual screen really evolved out of laziness. I quickly became bored applying and removing the masking on my fixed screen every time I went from watching a movie to watching TV. Not to mention the looks I would get from the family. Who's kidding who, they give me those looks all the time but why give them more ammunition. I mean what's wrong with them? Don't they realize that if we watch something in the wrong AR that we will be tortured and then have all off our displays set to Dynamic and have inaccurate colors and... Stop, I'm getting those looks again.
Back to the dual screen. It is really simple. Install a fixed screen, buy one or DYI, it does not matter. Find a board that is the same thickness, or slightly more, than the frame of your fixed screen and use this as a spacer. Cut a couple of pieces about two feet long. Install them on top of your screen at each end. Attach second pull down screen of your choice on the spacer boards, done. You can leave it like this or do as I did and buy some curtains, Target sale, to hide the hardware. An added benefit of these black curtains is greater perceived contrast, not to mention it just looks cleaner and better. Below I have pictures of my screen masked, first without, then with curtains.

Much better with curtains. You can also see my DYI speaker stands before paint.

New, to me, 106" Da-Lite High Power screen will arrive Wednesday, can't wait. Started Rango last night, PQ is excellent. The movie overall, final verdict is still up in the air.

I already bought it. Couldn't pass it up for 10 bucks. Yes I am one of those slime balls that stacked coupons at BB . I'll get over it.

I added some screeshots to my gallery. They were taken in the more dedicated room and are of my 2.35:1 masked screen. All shots were photographed using an Olympus E600 DSLR and cropped to size with no Photoshopping or other effects. Enjoy

Watched Limitless last night in the living room HT.

Pretty good PQ and AQ was excellent. Enjoyable movie once you suspend belief, for now relegated to rental until super sale time.

Re-calibrated one of my presets on my projector for the new screen. Also did some house keeping and added information on some of the photos in my galleries, enjoy.

Watching
Serviceable PQ and AQ but nothing special. Another movie picked by her. This movie makes Limitless look like an academy award winner. I'm so glad for rentals.

Next up in the queue is for some testosterone.

Took today off to hang with the family. Wife starts the school year Monday. What ever happened to the day after Labor Day? She teaches sixth grade in a not very good part of town, 30+ twelve yearolds to deal with everyday, heaven help her. I have a Blockbuster exchange to use. Wondering what to watch tonight. Any suggestions?
