I suppose I've been lucky with mine.

I mixed and matched all of the TTs and carts trying out all possible combinations, what an exiting life I lead , so not much. I based my opinions mostly on looks, function, and ease of use in that order.

You asked so here we go.

Sansui SR-4050 - Denon 103r, Hand picked with certificate of performance.

Realistic Lab-400 - Original R1000ED, a rebadged Shure M75ED Type 2, came with sealed new stylus.

Tannoy/Micro TM33 - Audio Technica AT120E, OEM stylus

Marantz 6100 - Audio Technica AT12xE, OEM stylus

Pioneer PL-A35 - Pickering XV-15 with OEM Pickering D625 from across the pond.

Tried every combination of TT and cart and determined the matches I have now sounded best to me.

Thanks dude ..........

That's quite the list of cartridges you're using ........................

Is that Denon low or high output ?

I spent part of this morning adjusting the VTA on my Perspex to really good results ........ I can't wait to upgrade the stylus/cartridge on that deck

The 103r is a low output MC cart. That is why I run it through the Denon AU-320 Step Up Transformer. It has two inputs so I can switch between MM and MC without having to unhook anything. None of my TTs have VTA so I do all of my adjusting in the headshell. What are you thinking about upgrading to? Or should I say which Grado are you looking at?

When CrazDogg dropped off my deck he also brought up a couple of older Prestige bodies and an older Gold stylus for me to try ............

Needless to say I dropped it in the Black body that was already mounted and the sound just opened up ......... It afforded me more detail, greater highs and a much smoother midrange . The bass, while more tuneful and deeper wasn't as impactful

I guess I'll play with what I have whilst saving for a better cartridge .......

I'd love to get me hands on a Sonata 1 (discontinued) at a discount

And here's a review ....................

Mornin' DR,
Nice read, maybe some day I'll get my hands on on of those wood beauties. For the price I paid for my new DL103R, $135, I don't think I would be able to find anything that sounds better. When she's do though, I would like to take a ride on that wooden Grado train.
