SD content online looks worse than DVD? Maybe that isn't as surprising as I'd like to think. In my experience, HD antenna TV (hey! ) is nowhere close to BD quality.

Pokemon TV uses insanely low bitrates - e.g. 1.3 Mbit/s for 720p.

The results vary depending on the content. Slow scenes may look fine, but a swarm of Spearows looks...

The @netflix trailer for #mewtwostrikesbackevolution features a Japanese Audio and Subtitle track!!!

Post-timeskip was such a downgrade to the perfection of pre-timeskip.

Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution is now on Netflix with the Japanese audio and English subtitles. The original soundtrack is intact as well.

It's like they're deliberately trying to sabotage their own remake.

The environments and whatnot look fine, and I suppose the Pokémon themselves look okay for the most part, but they don't contrast well with the human characters, who look hideous.

They really should have poured a little more money into this and issued a wide theatrical release as it could have attracted older and younger fans alike, and potentially pull similar numbers to last year's Detective Pikachu.

I may consider picking up a Blu-ray release (like I have for the last two films) should they decide to issue one. At least my sister may like to see it, and considering my library of unwatched Blu-rays/DVDs (which at this rate will take me years to get through), I can't see myself subscribing to any form of streaming service unless my folks are keen.

For the most part, the new English dub for Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution is much more faithful to the original Japanese than the 4Kids dub.

It seems that the subtitles are based on the English dub. That said, this dub is considerably more accurate than the dub for the first movie.

Also of note is the fact that the Japanese opening and closing themes ("Mezase Pokemon Master '98 (2019 Remaster)" and "Together with the Wind") are replaced with English songs on the Japanese audio track, not the just the English track. It's a bit jarring to go from Japanese audio to English songs.

Still, even with all that in mind, this is far better than what we've gotten for the last 20 years.

That could be for licensing reasons. Some companies are picky with that sort of thing.

Oh, yeah, I'm sure it is licensing. I'm wondering, though, if it has more to do with the Japanese wanting too much for TPCI to license it, or if TPCI just didn't want to pay no matter the cost. Let's face it, even though the franchise is Japanese, this is (to my knowledge at least) the first time in two decades that we've gotten anything officially released with Japanese outside of Japan.

That said, I'm incredibly happy to have what we have. I hope we get more of this in the future.

TPCI is way too cheap to pay the licensing fee.

They do seem to be embracing the Japanese side of the franchise when trailers and news pops up though.

In 2017, there was a music video featuring Magikarp, that was released with Japanese audio for several non-english markets:

English version for comparison:

Actually, the replacement of the OST/background music in both the series and movies is the one holdover left from the 4Kids days of butchering everything remotely Japanese in the show. If Carter Cathcart still produces the English version, which I believe he does, then the music is still being replaced both for a sense of "continuity" with the older seasons/movies which automatically replaced everything, and because he personally doesn't like it. We will never get a fully-uncensored English version until he leaves the show. He's been part of it since Day 1 of the 4Kids dub, survived the dub actor purge that occurred with the transition to the in-house TPCi dub by changing his VO name and throwing his fellow VOs under the bus (so he could take their meatier roles), and most likely will never leave the show.
