Default Sega Releasing The Genesis Mini Worldwide This September

genesismini.sega.com

https://www.gameinformer.com/2019/06...ions-of-tetris

It's only been a few months since Sega unveiled the revamped Genesis Mini, their own take on the minconsole that they spent the last two years making sure they got completely right. One of the important factors in nailing the concept is the game library, which Sega has slowly drip-fed out since announcement. Now we finally have the last 12 games, rounding out the full library of 42, with a surprising addition.

The newly-announced games are in bold.

Sonic the Hedgehog
Ecco the Dolphin
Castlevania: Bloodlines
Space Harrier 2
Shining Force
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
ToeJam & Earl
Comix Zone
Altered Beast
Gunstar Heroes
Earthworm Jim
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse
World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck
Contra: Hard Corps
Thunder Force III
Super Fantasy Zone
Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master
Streets of Rage 2
Landstalker
Mega Man: The Wily Wars
Street Fighter II: Special Championship Edition
Ghouls 'n Ghosts
Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
Beyond Oasis
Golden Axe
Phantasy Star IV: The End Of The Millennium
Sonic The Hedgehog Spinball
Vectorman
Wonder Boy in Monster World
Tetris
Darius
Virtua Fighter 2
Alisia Dragoon
Monster World IV
Kid Chameleon
Road Rash II
Eternal Champions
Columns
Dynamite Headdy
Strider
Light Crusader

Tetris is a shocking addition, much like Star Fox 2 on the SNES Classic. For those who don't know, Tetris was fully developed by Sega and an actual production run for the game started when some licensing issues halted the intended release. Supposedly, only 5-10 copies of the game exist, with Sega having likely ordered the entire first production run destroyed but some employees having managed to sneak some out. One copy signed by Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov had an asking price of $1,000,000 at auction; it did not sell anywhere near that amount, for the record.

The last 12 list also includes the Genesis version of Strider, which is commonly considered the best of the games based off the original arcade release. I'm also surprised anyone besides me remembers Alisia Dragoon, that game where you equip dragons and they follow you around and fight enemies for you.

Sega's Genesis Mini launches on September 19 for $79.99.

Itís pretty obvious Nintendo is going to do a mini N64.

Cool weíre getting another Sega console, technically

I have one of the ATGames portables and it works fine but to have this straight from Sega is nice.

Er... I expect it’ll be Mega Drive Mini in the UK. Which is usually thought of as ‘The West’ too. Fun! I recently got a Mega Drive collection for my PS4 though so I hope this has enough different games on it to justify a purchase.

GameCube Mini would be my dream ‘mini console’ now but I guess that might take a while.

I've got Sega Mega Drive Classics on the PS4 and I imagine this'll have a lot of the same games on it... but let's face it, I'll buy it anyway.

I've just received my Mega SG (JPN version) & earlier this year bought a HDMI modded N64 so I'm pretty set now (I have the NES & SNES minis already)

It'll be interesting to see what games are chosen outside of the usual suspects, now a Mega Drive with Mega CD mini would get my money - I'm hoping Analogue one day make a Mega CD add on so I can rest up my original hardware

Itís supposed to have 40 games, hopefully they throw in a few CD (and maybe even SMS) games.

Wouldnít it be cool if they sold a Power Base Converter Mini that plugs in on top w/ 40 SMS games, and a CD Mini underneath w/ 40 more games? This could also be a space saver, one HDMI/power for all.

WTH, Japan’s Mega Drive Mini gets the superior 6-button controllers? I bet they’re getting Alien Soldier to go with it...

That 6-button layout is so useful for classic gaming, I wish Sega would re-release their USB Saturn controllers again. There was some crappy knock-off version a few years ago, the Sega versions were better.

Oh well, I hope amazon.jp ships this overseas.

I'm gonna take a wild guess that this one will have the same ill-advised drawback as Nintendo and Sony's minis: no way to [legally/officially] add games.

I really donít see Sega setting up a store to purchase more titles, it would be cool though. Iím sure weíll just have to wait on a clever fan to provide unofficial access.

The game slot on top opens up. I was thinking yesterday, what if Sega made that an SD slot to allow loading roms? Probably not since it’d be easier through USB if they wanted but it would be a cool touch.

Mini 32X and CD addons would be funny but really cute. I doubt they would go that far. Again if they wanted to include those games it’s easier just to include them in the menu.

I believe they are, officially licenced regular and USB 6-button Megadrive & Saturn controllers are coming out in a couple of months, they’re on amazon to pre-order

Oh how I would love this to have been true! Earthworm Jim, The Terminator, Keio flying squadron, Snatcher, Sonic CD, Final fight, Mickey mania and a host of FMV games and I would be set

Such a genuinely underrated add on

I miss the original versions of the Lunar series, I hope if Sega does get around to releasing CD games they can obtain the licenses for all of those mentioned and more.

Then bring on Saturn and Dreamcast!

I also want a Dreamcast mini but since Dreamcast was the death of Sega consoles, I doubt we're getting it. Will be the 4th mini console I buy and pretty much the final stamp on my Pi being an emergency system only.
