After dealing with an audio calibrator, I boost my subs 10db in the AVR AFTER audyssey runs. Therefore I am running them 10db hot. They really knock, and to preserve headroom and just have hard hitting tight bass, I use Q 0.3.

AS for EQ 1 and EQ 2, I always end up on EQ 2. It has more thump for me and using test scenes in movies it always hits a higher db than EQ 1. I also do not feel Im missing a lot of low end after looking at the audyssey pro graphs.

EQ2 2 ports open will give the most output and have the most headroom available.

So, I run Q 0.3, EQ 2 2 ports open and 10db hot.

If I swap over to 1 port open, it knocks 2-3 db off every one of those numbers. You have to do some of your own testing though because every room acts differently.
That's the exact settings I use! Except that I run my sub hot to 5db because for music the bass is too powerful, even at half gain! 2 ports open gives the best thump for music, so rock hits hard and fast, it's also best for big and spacious rooms!

Here are my recent results:

Scene---1st VTF15---2nd in March---After pro cal and 90hz xover for flat response in room

Transformers, city battle at end---111.0---113.0---116.3 (hwy battle right before yielded 117 )
Act of Valor, gun boat scene---109.8---111.8---114.6
Iron Man 2, final battle---111.0---114.2---116.1
Episode 1, pod race---110.8---114.5---115.8

If I swap over to 1 port open, it knocks 2-3 db off every one of those numbers. You have to do some of your own testing though because every room acts differently.
Thanks, seems like a good place to start. As far as running your sub 10db hot, is that basically the sub being 10db higher than the rest of the speakers?

Dual VTF 15s are a wonderful thing. I thought about getting 4 at one time but 2 plus an ED A300 is really plenty for me right now.

There is a review of the two new subwoofers from Hsu in this month's Sound and Vision if any one is interested.

Default 880 Cu Ft Room: VTF-3 MK5 HP too much?

I'm making a standard 5.1 system for a 10x11 sized room. Now, unfortunately the only listening position I can use is the left corner, which I know is like the worst, but that's just what it is. I already have decided on getting the Paradigm Monitor series for everything but my subwoofer. I'm not particularly impressed Paradigm's under $1000 offerings, so I am looking elsewhere. I will have the full range/3 way monitor 11's in the front, so some of the upper bass duty will be handled there, but I am interested in two brands at this point: SVS and HSU.

In particular, for SVS, I'm looking at either the PB-1000 or the PB-2000. I'm sure in terms of power the 1000 would be enough to shake a 880 cubic foot room, but perhaps to be safe the 2000 model would be better?

For HSU, I'm looking at one model: the new VTF-3 MK5 HP. I really do like the look and specs on this as well as the tuning options. I used to have a Paradigm PW-1100 that I bought back in like 2001, but that's gone. So considering that as my only personal "subwoofer reference", how does the VTF-3 MK5 HP stack up to the old PW-1100 in terms of power and distortion? How are the BASH(HSU) and Sledge(SVS) amps?

I just want to be sure that I get a good sub that is at least on par with what I "know" of the old Paradigm for around $800 that works great on movies and music. Thanks........

I use a Hsu VTF2 MK4 in a 14x25 room with vaulted ceilings and a stairwell opening to the 2nd floor. This sub can put it down in that room. I honestly don't even think about adding another sub. My sub is likewise in the front left corner. I use Dynaudio Focus 260s, and they Hsu sub keeps up with them surprisingly well. Music or movies sound very good, but I rarely use it for music as the Dyns can handle that all on their own. I love the look and specs of the MK5 HP, but man... with what the 2 MK4 does, I feel like the 5 HP would be too much. Of course you can always dial the sub back. But if I was buying a new sub, it would be the 5HP.

Just pulled the trigger on a HSU VTF-3 Mk5 HP. Looking that the overall picture I needed to get a new sub...(so my wife can have the Klipsch in our room) and it was a great price with great features. I'm looking forward to some fun till I get the need for 2 in the living room..
