Thanks for that. I'm guessing that if it's using one output it thinks "I'm connected to a teevee!" so it squirts everything out as 5.1 to make it more compatible? Though Vriess' complaint isn't the first I've heard of someone having trouble with how the Pannys output mono in 5.1.

Discs do look better on it but there is such a performance gap between the two players that, unless it's a strong HDR movie like Pacific Rim, that's it's not worth the trouble (but then again I haven't been watching that many 4K movies lately either).

The forced auto shutoff is obviously something all units have. But using the 820 and 9000, I've never had to reload discs. Are you outside of the return period now? Because that sounds like something amiss with your unit.

It's only on some discs, but a sizable percentage don't want to load the first time. Guess I'll have to live with it at this point.

But the auto shutoff is the bigger deal for me. Also, it's irritating that I can't view the time elapsed/remaining on my display. Even a cheap player will offer that. Agree with the comment above that Panasonic simply doesn't care.

Unless there's some setting I turned on, I get 5.1 through the second HDMI on 1.0 encoded tracks. This is from criterion Godzilla Raids Again

Err, no you're right. I think maybe it's only bitstreamed tracks? They definitely don't go in a 5.1 container, but maybe I got confused and it was only PCM tracks it happened with anyway? In which case, ignore my post!

Well, looks like changing both options to PCM in the menu fixed it, I swear I thought I tried that, Cheers!

I have a UB820, and I'm thinking of getting a backup player but need some advice. It's for my bedroom, so I'm connecting to an HDTV. Rather than buying a Blu-ray player, I figure I will just future proof myself and get another UHD player as they are now inexpensive enough.

I'm looking at the Panasonic UB420 and the UB150. The differences I can see are that the UB150 has one HDMI and lacks optical audio and wifi capability. Are there any other differences, or are they basically the same player? Just curious if I should go cheap or ultra cheap as I don't need the optical or dedicated HDMI audio for my bedroom. Thanks.

I had an issue with my first 820 where anytime it auto shut off, it wouldn't read the disc the next time I started it up, pretty much every single time. I would always have to open and close the tray to get it to read.

A factory reset fixed this for me. Doesn't sound like the same problem you're having, but worth trying if you haven't already.

Get the 420 it has the same video processor as the 820 and 9000 also shares the same firmware. The 150 is the last player you should buy. every other player from all manufacturers is better than that one.

420 it is, thanks for that! The difference in price is nearly negligible, and since I'm familiar with the UI of the 820 I guess it's a no-brainer. I'd love to get a UB9000 as an upgrade but money is tight right now.

for my sins i am connected to a TX-65DX902B Panasonic TV using the Panasonic HDMI cable supplied with the player
Go in your TV’s menu and see if it has an Auto Lip Sync function to turn on. That’s supposed to be a feature of HDMI. If not, you can delay the audio in the player’s menu.

Anyone else in Canada with the UB820 have issues playing the first disc of Zack Snyder's Justice League 4K? My player won't even load it. Makes some loud crunching noises for about 20 seconds before saying it can't play the disc.

You didn't place two discs in the player by mistake? I did that the other day and the nice was terrifying.

lol no. I did it 3 times and wouldn’t load it. I read people had success after cleaning the disc so I tried that and it worked! But still freezes to the point of crashing back to main menu when it hits the 55:09 mark
