To be fair, it wasn't the most visible format. Peak marketshare in the 90s was something like 1% of the home video market and that might be with some generous rounding up.

Not surprising. Whenever I've scored LDs at the thrift, they've been mixed in with the records. The general public doesn't even know the difference between CDs and DVDs, in my experience. YMMV.

My mother still calls them all "tapes"...

My LD collection was at 40 titles as of the end of 2022. Now it's already at 60... I doubt it will ever reach my Blu-ray count, but it's growing as I'm hunting at more places...

Walked out of a thrift shop today with six LDs at $2.99 apiece:

The Onion Field
Rented Lips (1987 -- dir: Robert Downey Sr.)
Under The Volcano (sealed)
Utilities (sealed; 1983, Robert Hays/Brooke Adams)
Brady's Escape aka The Long Ride (1983, John Savage/Kelly Reno)
Treasure Island: The Musical (sealed; 1982)

These were all mixed in with the vinyl records and the first few LDs I found were all ridiculously priced at $29.99 (nothing special about the titles) but as I looked further, I found a bunch that hadn't been priced so I grabbed the ones I wanted and fortunately they were sold to me for $2.99 each

UPDATE JAN 11: Went back and picked up two more --

The River Rat (sealed, 1984, Tommy Lee Jones/Martha Plimpton/Brian Dennehy)
Robert Klein on Broadway (1986)

Just finished watching the Hitchcock film Frenzy. As I quite often do after watching a movie, I'll read the Trivia part about it on IMDB. There were two Laserdisc references regarding the film:

"When long-running movies finish on an odd numbered side of a LaserDisc set, the other side usually has a short message saying that the program is recorded on the other side. On the old American DiscoVision sets (which were in CAV format and ran for around thirty minutes a side), they would press a side from another movie rather than have it blank. Side 6 of this movie contains a side from Jaws (1975)."

"Side Five of the DiscoVision LaserDisc release has every frame encoded with Auto Picture Stop, rendering it unplayable on all but a few models of LaserDisc players."

Daisuke is a national treasure! So glad at the success he's had with his channel. Super nice guy to chat with and he'd often pop in to the chats hosted by Sam Hatch and give his input.

I’m kind of hoping that Criterion gets King Kong (1933) back for its UHD release. Not that I’ve been unhappy with Warner’s releases. I don’t think we’ve gotten any of the earlier Criterion Laserdisc extras on DVD or BD.

I might jump into Ld-gang next week, there is Pioneer 919 on sale.

It is japanese/NTSC-model.

Does it play PAL-movies (or is there such thing)? I ask because I live in Europe.

More questions is coming if/when I bought it

Why don't you just buy a PAL LD player if you want it to play PAL LD's. It most likely won't it will be NTSC only. Unless you have a huge collection of NTSC LD's just get a PAL LD player. They made PAL/NTSC combo LD players but they are pricey. I never needed one I only have 1 PAL LD which I got in an LD lot I purchased.

I only have one PAL LD as well, but it's the Jurassic Park fossil edition which I imported from the UK. A guy on Reddit wanted it but only wanted to pay a few bucks for it because he couldn't play it...

Japanese models won't playback PAL. There are Pioneer players that play both PAL and NTSC and have that label on the front of the device. Not sure if there was a 919 PAL/NTSC player.

How do LaserDiscs look with a CRT effect from something like the OSSC or RetroTINK-5X?
Complete with alternating scanlines.
