Default Blu-ray vs. Laserdisc DTS (Yes... Laserdisc)

OK. I know what you're thinking: Laserdiscs haven't been around for a decade now, so why bring it up? I mention it because I'm curious about the audio quality of the DTS soundtracks on LDs compared to Blu-Ray.

I don't have a Blu-Ray player yet so I can't compare, but the uncompressed DTS on laserdiscs easily blows away any DVD in my collection, as do most DD LDs. Do Blu-Ray discs sound better than these LDs, or are they about the same? Thoughts? Opinions?

It is sooooooooo funny you mention this NOW because I JUST got into laserdiscs and not only are they still around...they are around with a vengeance.

This question is hard to answer because of a couple of different factors.

First off, Yes (in comparison) uncompressed Blu audio is on par if not better when compared to "A" laserdisc. The only thing is, most of the DTS laserdisc movies have not been released in Blu yet so we can't compare them directly.

From my research (and remember, I am a LD newbie) Waterworld DTS is the holy grail of Laserdiscs (still around 40 bucks on ebay.) I would call this the measuring stick from what I have read and you won't know for sure until Waterworld goes Blu.

But yeah man...right on with the Laserdisc format. I can't get over how crazy expensive the players still are. I sovled my problem with this dude in Florida who does lossless transfers from Laserdisc to DvD and I got into it, because there are alot of documentaries and concerts I loved watching years ago that I had on VHS but were never released on dvd.

Please please please pm me with any links to cool places you know of to buys discs.

I have the ones anyone would find by Googling them, but if there are any standards I'd love to know.

Thanks man, catch you on the flipside,

We were big into laserdiscs. never really cared for dvd. The audio on Blu-ray is excellent. We watch more movies now, than we have since our LD player died.

Glad to see other people still into LD. Yeah, I still buy used ones too. The best place I find is usually eBay, but you might want to try www.lddb.com as well.

The best sounding LDs I have are probably The Rock DTS (which I believe is available on Blu-Ray), Jurassic Park DTS, and the DD version of Star Wars Episode I. (I don't have Waterworld.) I've read that Fight Club is also really great on LD.

I have a few titles that haven't been available on any other digital format, like David Lynch's Industrial Symphony #1 and various LDs by The Cure. I've been into laserdisc since long before anyone ever heard of DVDs.

Specifically, I was wondering about two movies that are available as both DTS LDs and Blu-Ray titles: Independence Day and Dark City. Anyone have an audio comparison?

DTS on LD is about 1.235Mbps. Compare that to DTS HDMA on BD which is easily above 6Mbps.

The audio quality of DTS lossy is dependent on the master tracks to begin with. What we get from DTS HDMA is bit-to-bit quality of the master tracks, assuming that it was sampled at the same sampling rate as the master.

I'm glad there are some LD lovers on here. I have 3 different Pioneer LD players and about 100 discs. Some pretty rare. For those that are looking, yes Ebay you can find specific titles you are looking for, but i've picked up some big sets from people on Craigslist. Plus some old mom and pop video stores sell them.

The uncompressed PCM 2 channel Stereo was 44,056 Hz/16 bit

The compressed 5.1 DTS on Laserdisc was 1.536 Mb/s equivalent to the DTS core on Blu-rays

The compressed 5.1 DolbyDigital was called AC-3 in those days and was the 384 kb/s variety.

No it doesn't have HDMI. But it might have a flux capacitor...

The latest ones had RCA composite out and S-Video out

LOL ! Yeah figured !
Was reading that AD ,and was wondering ...
U think the tech has increased more in the 30years after that came out ,or the 30years before it . If you go back to 1950 and tell someone about this LaserDisc thingy ,I think they would laugh at u . Tell someone in 1981 about Blu and It would probably b more accepted . Just bored at work I guess !

I've got 270 Laserdiscs I'll sell for 200.00 and all but 5 are in pristene shape. The Pulp Fiction big box set... the Abyss directors cut box set... can't list them all but I was going to put an ad in the local paper because they're just so damn heavy to pack and ship.

Ah...Laserdics! Yes, it was a great format. When all of my other friends were oooo'ing and ahhhh'ing over VHS or even SVHS I was spinning discs and really rocking out. I owned one of the first Magnavox players and bought up a huge collection of the discs for $10 each when it looked like the RCA needle/groove player was going to win the format war. I still have two players and about 100 discs. It was a great format and state of the art in the 80s and early 90s. I need to dub off some of my hard to find discs to DVD one of these days. I've already burned some of my VHS classics to DVD and can once again enjoy them.

I only have 2 laserdiscs left. I'm sure those titles will never arrive on DVD so I keep them.

However,... The picture quality looks so poor that I can't watch them. LD PQ is no longer watchable for me. I guess if I had a great video processor but I don't.

My 12 year old Pioneer LD still works and I still watch LD's every now and then. I have a bout 16-20 LD's. They sould good compaired to DVD/VHS, but unfortunately it cannot hang with a Blu-ray disk. Didn't know they still sell them. I appreciate the link to the lddb. I may have to get Goldeneye.

All I have on LD is classic animation boxsets (Golden Age of Looney Tunes, The Art of Tom and Jerry, Betty Boop, MGM Happy Harmonies, etc). Sound obviously isn't an issue for me...but this is stuff that might or might not see releases on either DVD and/or BD.

Default From what I have studied, this is the one to buy.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...VD_Player.html

This Pioneer DVL-919 is supposedly the sickest, most intense laserdisc player in the universe.

It has no HDMI (none of them do) but it does have S-video and an optical out.

It is also a DvD player and I'm sure you can cook eggs on it, so it does everything.

Pioneer still makes this, but it is crazy expensivo for a dead movement.

The information you posted is accurate. I only collected a few titles on BETA and never collected analog VHS tapes. I have several hundreds of Laserdiscs that I have been selling when a better version of the movie is released on BLU-RAY or DVD. The Laserdisc format DTS sound track was double the bit rate of the DVD movie releases. Laserdisc in general had better sound then DVD but the picture quality was not as good compared to Super bit dual layer DVD’s and other quality dual layer DVD’s. There might be some laserdisc titles that are never released on BLU-RAY or DVD and perhaps I will always have a few Laserdiscs that I will never sell. Good thing my Pioneer Laserdisc is still working. Pioneer makes excellent quality products that can last over 10 years.
Thanks to BLU-RAY we now have 7.1 PCM and 7.1 DTS HD Master Audio that is identical to the studio master with super high bit rates that are better then D-VHS and Laserdisc. Laserdisc and D-VHS both had the same sound quality for the DTS sound tracks.

Default This guy does the transfers

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWA:IT&ih=017

Okay, so...when I found out how much players were going for, I decided to just get a couple of discs that were never released on DvD and I know for a fact will never be released in Blu and have this dude transfer them.

I haven't received my first transfer yet, but I can tell you right off the bat he has handled my order thus far like a total champ.

His communication is so fast, it is almost like you are im'ing him.

I won my disc from him at around 11pm eastern time and he dumped it and packed it THAT NIGHT.

I should get my first disc today or tomorrow, I'll let you guys know.
