Default Tom Cruise stars in impassioned PSA against motion smoothing

"Cruise starts the video with a smile, but gets pretty serious at times. Just listen to the indignation in his voice when he says, “Most HDTVs come with this feature already on, by default” and as he complains how manufacturers obfuscate ways of disabling it."

"TV manufacturers are reportedly ready to hear directors out, and the PSA notes that some are making motion smoothing easier to switch off. But in the meantime, Cruise and McQuarrie are on a crusade to bring attention to the issue."

Disappointed they didnít have a montage of directors looking teary-eyed for the camera while a Sarah McLachlan song played.

I've never liked that feature on any TV, always turn it off straight away.

I thinks it's awesome that Tom Cruise is raising awareness. There are so many people who don't know that it's a feature which is enabled by default.

Folks, He's an actor who was reading from a teleprompter while upstaging McQuarrie the whole time! But a great PSA nontheless.....

Some people put the toilet paper forwards, some people put it backwards. Where's the PSA for the right way?

He's an actor, but he certainly wasn't getting paid for this one...he may well enjoy knowing about proper TV set-up. Obviously he is not a fan of shaky cam stupidity or he wouldn't keep hooking up with McQuarrie.

This is so cool, way to go Tom and Chris.

As someone who loves great action films, McQuarrie is gold to me. So enjoyable to watch an action film where you get to SEE all the action and how real it looks, something you can't really appreciate with absurd shaky cam shot nonsense like Bourne 2~4, Quantum of Solace, Safe House, etc.

Tom would be proud.

The point he is making is that he makes the picture and experience WAAAAAY better than it was with factory default settings.

I always leave the smooth motion feature on my TV turned off. Can't stand it and it really annoys me when I go to someone's house and their TV has it turned on. I get it that its their TV and they have the right to have their settings the way they want to, but it just looks like crap.

And not everyone is going to shell out money for someone to come out and calibrate their TV for them. While I don't blame enthusiasts for doing so if they want to, the idea that this should be viewed as some kind of end all / be all requirement is asinine.

Tom Cruise ain't no scrub when it comes to home theater. He's said before that he's watched a movie a day for a couple decades now. I also remember him saying on Fallon or something one time that he went right to Laserdisc back in the 80's, over VHS, to have the best possible quality. Assuming he kept that up there's a good chance motion smoothing actually is a pet peeve of his.

So why are people so hyped about HDMI 2.1 and higher frame rates. Higher frame rates would kind of look like frame interpolation, aka, soap opera effect. Remember the cinema presentation of the Hobbit at 48 frames, theatrically it looked like the soap opera effect and was hated.
