God of War: Ragnarok coming in 2022

PlayStation and developer Santa Monica Studio have today revealed that God of War Ragnarok has sold through a baffling number of copies across PS5 and PS4. Back when Ragnarok first launched in November 2022, PlayStation announced soon after that the game had sold 5.1 million units in its first week, making it the fastest-selling first-party game in PlayStation's history.

It's nice to see games like this and Elden Ring selling tons of copies on 2022. Keep the large scale (mostly) single-player games coming, please.

The Last of Us made heavy use of the cell on PS3, one of the few games to do so, which is why it could look so good on a PS3. But when they went to port it to PS4 it became a huge challenge just to get it running at all since it was so heavily optimized for the PS3. I think they said they're first attempt resulted in a black screen and it took a while to get anything to even show up.

Finally beat Ragnarok last week, now I’m playing Spider-Man remastered for the 3rd time. Can’t wait for the new Spidey game.

I'd argue GoW: Ascension was the best looking PS3 game ever and the one to utilize the cell architecture moreso than any other game. It's why it could pass as a PS4 game.

I have a simple question :

There’s so many games that have come out and are still coming out on both PS4 and PS5 simultaneously (God of War Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West… even the upcoming Atomic Heart etc - just to name a few). Did this happen with the PS3 and PS4 when the PS4 was two years old? Were they still releasing games on the PS3 at the same time as the PS4 ?

I never had a PS3, so I wasn’t paying attention … and I didn’t get a PS4 until after the Pro came out

It took both PS3 and PS4 to year 3 (maybe even year 4 for PS3) before they really started hitting their stride. IMO, there has never been a PlayStation console that has gotten so many high-quality games so quickly as the PS5. I have been truly loving this generation so far!

I consider the launch of Uncharted 2 when PS3 really started coming into its own. That came out in 2009, so yeah about 3 years after the PS3 launch. I ended up loving the PS3 by the end of the generation but let me tell you, those first couple of years were rough and really tested my loyalty LOL.

PS4 had a little bit of a slow start but I wasn't nearly as frustrated as I was with PS3. PS4 launched with Killzone Shadowfall (a game I actually quite liked), Resogun, Knack, etc and not too long after that we had Infamous Second Son and Driveclub, two games I enjoyed a lot. Once Bloodborne launched though the momentum was like a snowball! Still, neither of those got off to the insane fast start the PS5 has.

The PS3 was kinda failing in their first years. No thanks to Sony's hubris of them expecting people to pay $600 for a console, the worst press conference in E3's history ("RIIIIIIIIDGE RACER!"), and a complete lack of games until 2009.

The PS4 had better PR thanks to them roasting Xbox during the E3 2013 conference but they didn't have much to write home about until Bloodborne.

Was the PS3 “failing” because of the huge success of the PS2? I know the PS2 was the most successful of the 5 so far

Finally jumped into this game over the weekend (and GoW just before that, finally). I'm absolutely floored by the graphics (and such praise coming from a spoiled PC gamer to boot).

The combat mechanics feel tighter/refined, and I'm loving the exploring even more than the first game. But is it just me or do some of those inner-mountain boat sequences give anyone else theme park log ride vibes lol? Magic Kingdom or Six Flags, anyone?

The PS3 had games before 2009. I got one in summer 2007 and within that first year I was playing Uncharted, Warhawk, Modern Warfare, Ratchet and Clank, Heavenly Sword, MGS4, DMC4, VF5, Resistance...

An answer to what I think your question was, iirc the PS3 was cut off pretty quickly from anything that wasn't a yearly sports title or CoD after the PS4 launched besides the last couple first party titles deep into development. We're seeing so much cross over this gen because of the relative ease of developing a game across PS4 and PS5 (and Xbox-Series) platforms as well as the availability issues since launch of these current platforms. Nobody in their right mind throws away a 100+ million userbase despite what SONY claimed when they announced the PS5. Aside from their respective UI's, development for SONY and MS is the same as developing for a closed PC.

We're already seeing a dramatic decrease with this years releases...

Forspoken - PS5 only
FF 16 - PS5 only
FF7: Rebirth - PS5 only
Stellarblade - PS5 only
Spider-Man 2 - PS5 only
Horizon: Burning Sands - PS5 only

Id say with the exception of MLB The Show and maybe some of these GAAS titles Sony is working on, we're done with cross gen titles.
