It was due to censorship reasons. I remember the big fuss at the time. Japanese release was in colour because there were no issues regarding the level of gore.

If this is for sure, then there is no reason for the black and white version's existence, except for someone's personal preference dictated by the fact that they are accustomed to the censored black and white version, and not the uncut version.

Actually, though, there is more to it than that. There was an homage to Chang Cheh. The whole film is pretty violent, yes? So, according to info I read years ago, Quenten decided to do an homage by turning a particular sequence from color to black and white. It was certainly timed with the removal of the eye.

I am aware of the homage disguised as censorship angle. It's possible.

I edited my comment above, but I mentioned that some internet digging on this needs to be done.

I want it in digibook.
I want it in steelbook.
I want it in Ultimate Collector's Edition with action figures.

Heck I'd be happy with just a plain ole announcement.

The Japanese will probably get that if this happens, like with the their limited editions of Kill Bill 1 & 2.

Ahem. They aren't actually action figures, but still...

I might still have some articles pertaining to this, I think. I will see if I can find them.

You've missed out on years of some of the best video transfer work ever done. You'll also be missing out on the theatrical cut experience, which might be superior, who knows.

Yeah, the movies work fine in their theatrical form. Would I buy The Whole Bloody Affair on Blu? In a heartbeat. But I'd still keep my theatrical Blus because they play well in that form, especially considering each movie does have a different tone. I've had my copies for a couple of years now and I couldn't be happier with them.

After having the Japanese uncut DVDs i would never watch the theatrical again as its obviously compromised to get an R rating. Which is why i have held off buying Kill Bill on Blu after all these years.

I had felt this way (only have the first one from Japan though, the changes to 2 don't matter) but after cracking for the cheap BD's and watching them, I can't go back to the dvd. While I prefer the fight in color, the overall quality of the BD is sooooooooooo far better, that it's near impossible to stand the dvd anymore. Now I'll only watch that one scene from the dvd. Never thought I'd go back to the black & white when I got that, but that was before HD.

Given the Weinstein issues, I'd say this is a ways off. If ever.
