12 years definitely ain't bad. i think my gfa 7400 would last another decade with no issues as well. i have toyed with the idea of selling it, but due to lack of interest and second thoughts on my part, it will be with me for the forseeable future. the thing truly is a USA made tank...

Well now after selling the amp and pre/pro i kick myself for doing so! At the time of the BluRay transition i ran the gear with 6 channel inputs to get the lossless audio which was fine but i guess it boils down to i wanted a change and jumped onto the swiss army knives of the reciever world! I guess i finally caved in. When i bought the reciever i needed as much money as i could scrape together because of the wife factor! i should have kept the amp! It is going to be my mantra for 2011 to get a new amp and pre/pro! I loved that gear

If you have time i invite you to post on my thread: Humble beginnings in home theater

Hi all,

I've been meaning to check out this thread for awhile...

I've had my 1st Adcom (a GFA-555) since I bought it new in 1986. Awesome amp! I have also toyed with an upgrade over the years, but I'm never sure what to replace it with that doesn't cost a fortune. Who knows, maybe one day.
Paul
Happy New Year!

Indeed.

I picked up a 555 MKII today. More than likely will be using to power the Acoustat's. I'll post some pics after I figure where it's resting place will be.

How did I miss this thread?!

Demoed a pair of JBL LSR305 and enjoyed them so much I decided to buy a pair for the living room. Needed something basic to run them and then found a used Adcom GTP-500 II. Outstanding combination so far. Really happy.

Smile Adcom 7805 upgrade

Hi all,

Haven't been around this website lately but figured I'd stop by and see how us vintage Adcom guys are doing...

I did sell my GFA 2535 a few months ago and moved the 555 to my son's system. Definitely overkill for his set up, but he loves it.

In any event I found a really good buy on an Adcom 7805 and it has taken over the home theater responsibility. Of course the 555 has always done its job and kept me happy but the new 7805 has more power and the bass seems slightly more controlled and tighter across the front. But the biggest impact has been on the surrounds, and to a lesser extent, the center. Vandersteen speakers have never been known for efficiency or ease of driving so now when listening at high volume, the surrounds are definitely clearer. To explain further, I'm sure we've all noticed how music can get a little "congested" (for lack of a better term) at high volumes. It doesn't necessarily equate to distortion but it usually indicates something has reached (or is close to) its limit. The 2535 was 60 X 2 for the surrounds and was thus the weakest link in my system. I have not heard this unfortunate
phenomenon in the several months I've had the upgrade. Yay!

Regards!

Paul

Ummm....yeah! !!!!! Paul, I would have never run your system with a 2535...ever. I know Adcom under-rates their amps, but those are some serious rears and center that you have! You now have the juice for your setup! Love your Vandersteen setup and I'm sure the rears and center love you now for giving them the power they thirst for! I don't think you will ever hear that problem again.......

Yeah, understood. I had one of the 2535 amps bridged so it gave me 200 watts for the VCC-2 center, which matched the 555 across the front pretty well. When I bought the amp (a lonnnng time ago), the rear channels for Dolby Pro Logic were not that demanding and I did not have the VSM's in the back (yet).

So..., I upgraded the center and surround speakers and knew the rear amp was next in the upgrade march. I thought about getting another 555 for the rear which would have given me 200 X 5, but then decided to wait until I could upgrade all 5 amps at once. So my patience seems to have paid off.

Talking Adcom GFA-5800

I just reconfigured the rack in my HT system. I added another Adcom, replacing the Parasound. I put the (previously placed) GFA-555ii to my rear surrounds, and just got myself a new to me, Adcom GFA-5800 for my fronts. What a tank of an amp, weighing in at 66lbs. It was a one owner, from quite an audiophile collection. It's like brand new, inside & out, just like my 555ii is. I haven't had time yet to put the new setup through the paces, but from what I hear coming from the 5800...

Here's a few quick pics.

Nice...very nice!!!! I sold my Adcom 5503 pretty cheap, $300. I loved that amp - but it's doing its job in my friends system (Chris38)!

the Triple nickels are great amps and hold their value well.. i bought a used one on ebay a long time ago.. had it 7-8 years and sold it for 90% of of what i paid for it.. mine was the first version of the 555 though..
