My new under $100 total portable rig I love:

Warm & stupid bassy (meaning properly powered TH-X00PH level low end), yet clean enough with nice forward mids and smooth easy highs with good enough detail...just got the cheap phone as a hand me down when mine died last week.

I just found a great video I will use in demos of my STAX setup:

That bass punch... so intense yet so precise and detailed along with all the cymbal work. No fluke... my modded STAX is up there close to my TH-X00 Purplehearts in low end... kicks nearly as HARD but in a laser focused manner where the Purpleheart does have some more impact but is much broader and looser sounding, nowhere as controlled. This song on my system shows STAX can hit HARD with bass (nearly TH-X00 PH hard) and why it's my favorite reproduction of bass from a headphone. Power and intensity with ultimate speed and precision and extremely natural tone.

Vracer111, have you ever had head time with the Ebony model of your Fostex? If so, how do they compare to the Purpleheart??
I finally broke down after such a long time resisting the urge, and bought a pair today. So many headphones, but only a few closed backs, so figured I need a good set , lol.

Ebony is the one I haven't heard, I have the Purpleheart (two actually) and Mahogany. From what I understand, the ebony is the most neutral of the bunch... smoother highs, most prominent mids, and cleanest sound. Very much would like to listen to one.

Any specific reason for owning 2 of the purplehearts? Is one modded?

Modding purposes... needed one as a standard to compare changes against, picked up used for basically 1/2 price. Pretty much done with the Purpleheart mods and will sell off two of my TH-X00s and the Denon AH-2000 (drivers and cups) - only keeping a single TH-X00. Will either be a Purpleheart or the Palo Santo (depending on how the mods go on it.) ... but most likely will be a Purpleheart.

My Purplehearts are both modded - Lawton driver damping on both with Jmoney V3 lambskin pads with custom pad attenuators on one and Yaxi Alcantara pads with custom attenuators on the other. Was able to directly compare difference the Lawton driver damping makes before installing it on the second Purpleheart by comparing them head to head. Since they both have the driver damping been trying to find an alternate to the Jmoney V3 lambskin pads, and there simply isn't any.

Purchased a set of those Meze closed backs from Massdrop.

Purely for business trip usage. My new job involves sooooo much air-travel now. So I need something.
I kinda miss my music while I'm away. My family not so much.

Would DEFINITELY like to hear your impressions. Personally I love the 99 classics I have. I've had them for a few years and won't get rid of them. They say the Noir is supposed to sound just like the 99 classics but there's varying opinions out there. Would be curious whenever you get them and get a chance.

If anyone is interested at all, my first attempt at a review on Head-Fi. Let me know what you think if you even read it.

Iím not expecting much for $200. As long as they sound okay for travel use. Airports, planes, hotel etc....

Don't know how it can sound any better, really. Maybe a different tube amp later on down the road, who knows.
Gonna probably be selling off any other DACs and amps I have. Some headphones, too, just gotta figure out which ones I can't live without.
Endgame... um, yeah, I lied, lol.
Sold the Oppo and made a large profit and am now using the SMSL SU-8 that I bought off Massdrop when it first launched. Sounds really great for a DAC that was $200, clear and transparent.

Yeah, 'endgame'... still not sure what that really means, seems to be able to change in an instant! LOL

Cost doesn't matter to me to a point... for portable endgame it's my Koss Porta Pro's with Yaxi pads for under $50 total and played on a sub $50 phone with stock player and EQ. Full system 'endgame' is my STAX rig, and honestly don't see it's configuration changing...RME ADI-2 DAC + NAD C275BEE stereo amp just absolutely rocks for an E-stat rig. In all honesty I want to spend the least amount I can to get the sound I'm after... which is why am using stereo amp already had to power them and sold the SRM-323S driver to offset much of the Mjolnir Audio SRD-7 transformer cost...so for $250 + RME ADI-2 DAC I have my E-stat rig that am 100% satisfied with. Really looking forward to the future release of the Kaldas Research RR 1 too, that may be prefered to the L300 Limited if it is indeed warmer and a little more laid back...and $500 makes it an absolute bargin.

Had coworker I'm friends with who lives nearby drop off some food in exchange for some yard work and invited her for a quick demo of the STAX rig with my modded L300 Limiteds (she very much likes audio and has asked for my recommendations/suggestions on headphones and IEMs in the past and also asked to check out my STAX rig to 'see what the fuss is about'). Played the drum solo video I posted above and she just sat there absolutely dumbfounded... took them off and said 'My H9i's [B&O] sound like absolute shit compared to these...you can hear every little detail, and sooo clear - never heard ANY headphone like this in my life! I can absolutely understand you listening to these all night until the sun comes up."

So I think she'll stop getting on me for spending money on yet another pair headphones... for a little bit at least. LOL

I did decide to go a little bit different on one of my HD58X...ordered wood cups for it - decide on Zebrawood since should be a fairly neutral and detailed wood (that is fairly dense and hard) to help offset the slightly darker sound the Yaxi alcantara pads bring.

Wood cups? Closed ones?
And nowadays, cost of gear doesn't really equal quality of sound. I have one of those JDS Labs Atom head amps, thing can power any of my cans without a hitch, and sounds great, all for $99. I paired it with a Topping D50 DAC I had , sits on my desk, takes up next to no space.

End game can happen.
My rig was changing weekly/monthly for years. Then boom! it happened.
Didnít want to change a thing.
My rig has been unchanged for a year now and I donít see anything changing soon.

If the Massdrop Metz (sorry canít remember the model number) works out okay then I might treat myself to the Oppo portable thingy (HA2 I think). However thatís not much.

Gonna have to find an HA-2 on Ebay, and will cost you top dollar probably. Maybe the Topping NX4 DSD would do what you need, portable DAC/amp, http://www.tpdz.net/products_detail/productId=25.html

But with the Meze 99's, you should be ok with just your phone or DAP.

Okay cool. We have a iPhone 5 132G retired at home. So I might just blank that and use it for music only.

The Massdrop Fostex Ebony have become my new headphones for listening to Iron Maiden (my favorite band), Steve Harris' bass sounds unbelievable on these, every little nuance is just perfect and clear, along with everything else sounding spot on. Would like to hear the purplehearts, but am glad I got these, enough bass to satisfy, but not too much, just smooth across the board, but impactful.

Massdrop is fast becoming a game changer in the HP market.
Lots of options. I like their work.
