Oh wow, thanks for explaining that. So that was literally baked into the actual negatives? I'll have to watch that featurette.

By the way, my girlfriend and I loved the slideshows and the comic book. That comic really looked stunning, and those slideshows were very entertaining. I'd buy a disc just full of those.

Grizzly Adams is a perfect example of that sadly. It's a gorgeously-shot series but the DVDs are in terrible condition, and they claimed it was due to the source material. Yet Little House on the Prairie got a stunning blu-ray remaster for all 9 seasons. Of course that show is more popular so it got some money thrown at it to restore it. Grizzly Adams sadly doesn't have that popularity, even though I'm sure it could be restored as long as they have the negatives. Like you said, money is the key ingredient. For films like this, we're lucky to have them at all, and to have them look as good as they do is a miracle.

Again congratulations to 3D archives. Considering the source material, the restoration was magnificent.

As far as the movie itself, it was mediocre at least for me. But I'm glad it was restored and I could have it in my collection.

I wouldn't call the movie mediocre, but then again I love 70's kung-fu. I can't praise this film enough for it's embracing of the 3D format though, it's one of the best you'll ever see. The 3D restoration is as spectacular as I expected which makes this a disc that deserves to be in everyone's collection. To be honest, the 3D comic book extra alone makes this disc a must-buy, I would buy a whole disc of those no questions asked!

Received this last Thursday, so about a week’s delivery time. Very nice. It was once again delivered by Hermes, so I guess that is who WowHD is using these days. It came tracked so I could follow it all the way to my door.

Hi 13,

That's why I congratulated 3D Archives for a magnificent job well done. I loved the comic book, especially since I owned it as a kid!

But as far as martial arts, I became a casual fan thanks to 3D. Unfortunately, guess I just got spoiled with Detective Dee, Tai Chi 1 and 2, Flying Swords, monkey king series, White Haired Witch, etc. Know they all had much bigger budgets, but the stories were captivating. Maybe it's because I'm a casual fan I might not have appreciated the Kung fu as much as you did.

Joe,

I think i know what you mean. I liked Dynasty more for what it represents and the hard work that went into it than the actual movie. I did highly enjoy some of the scenes including the final fight scene and felt the big bad was pretty hard core. In a perfect world would have preferred native language with english subs but understand this was not possible. Absolutely loved the extras from A to Z!! I didnt lose my head over this movie, but would definitely buy again.

Dynasty really embraces the nuttiness - both of the genre and the pop-out format - and that makes it a glorious 3D experience for me. I think the fight choreography is amazing; it's not as quick and slick as subsequent fight classics, but it looks dangerous, the moves make intuitive sense (insofar as fantasy wuxia can make sense), and the sword fights especially have heft and lethal purpose. It's dazzling to watch this kind of action in such bold 3D.

And it kinda proves what we've said before, about the way 3D is used being appropriate to the kind of film being presented. If this had tried for a sophisticated story with dramatic gravitas, the constant breaking of the fourth wall would have probably undermined it. But it's basically a string of fight sequences in which impossible feats are performed every few seconds. So the decision to go nuts with the pop-outs is entirely appropriate. The story, the stunts, the fight choreography all embrace the nuttiness - everything is OTT. The 3D almost has to keep up or risk feeling superfluous. When a guy catches arrows with his bare hands and then leaps thirty feet onto a roof, suddenly a sword poking out of the screen doesn't seem so ridiculous. And it's all self-consciously goofy anyway. When the rules of physics disappear, the fourth wall should also disappear, IMO.

Anyway, I loved it. The main villain gives a strong performance, as does the turncoat officer. The use of 3D is as inventive as the fighting, with locations becoming characters in themselves thanks to the camera angles and depth layering. My favourite part was the extended fight atop the waterfall - the bizarre weaponry and copious head-lopping epitomized the film. I can't wait to watch it again.

Very good extras, too, as others have said. The horror books were fun, the 3D slideshows nice bonus treats, and Mike Ballew's doc on the 3D camera rigs gave some great insights. If Shogun Women is as much fun as Dynasty, 2021 is shaping up to be the best vintage 3D blu-ray year yet!
