Default The Blue Max (1966) (Limited Edition) - SOLD OUT

Pre-order: http://www3.screenarchives.com/title...BLUE-MAX-1966/

Quote:
James Mason, George Peppard and Ursula Andress highlight this stirring drama set in Germany during the close of World War I. Bruno Stachel (Peppard), a peasant promoted into the elite German air force, finds himself battling both the enemy in the sky and the prejudices of his higher-born fellow fliers. To overcome this stigma, Stachel proves he will go to any length-honorably or dishonorably, to win his country's most coveted air medal, Blue Max. But he soon learns the price he must pay for being proclaimed a hero in this highly acclaimed film with its uncompromising story and spectacular flying sequences.

Yes!!! I am getting this for sure. One of the best World War One movies. Great performances from George Peppard, Jeremy Kemp and James Mason with a great Jerry Goldsmith score. Close your eyes listening and you can picture yourself flying in the clouds.

Thumbs up

This will be worth the money just for the isolated score. One of Goldsmith's very best!

Is there something wrong with the German release?

Will temporarily end my embargo of TT purchases (overpriced and terrible shipping) for this one.

My dad's birthday is 2/18 and this is his favorite film after The Searchers so I will definitely be ordering this one.

With all these classic films getting such a short window, I feel the pain for the fans of each of these releases. Sony/Twlight time's business model is really freaking stupid with limiting the number to 3000. With some titles selling out in less than a day.

But I would totally be in the same boat if universal did the same with 2 of my most wanted upgrades.

1. Streets of Fire
2. Howard the Duck (Yes I'm serious)

Howard the Duck is available from Germany and has a decent transfer. The problem is that it's region B locked.

Default "Limited to 3,000 Copies" ... So, What's the Point? You Can't Buy It, Anyway!

It's funny seeing all the entries stating they're going to buy it on "Day One" and can't wait to add it to their collections... when no one here can buy it! It's limited to 3,000 copies and apparently all of them are spoken for as this title is not being released for actual sale. Go ahead... try to pre-order it or otherwise purchase it. Yeah... that's right... you can't!

So, what's the point?!

The Blue Max Blu-ray

For our friends who require foreign language options for this film, surprisingly, Fox has already revealed that the Japanese variant will be out from them on April 25th, 2014:

http://video.foxjapan.com/search/detail.php?id=14007

As long as we see other variants pop up shortly (and we should), this disc should be Region ABC and have all the usual audio and subtitles options for where Fox owns the title (which in the case of The Blue Max, is everywhere). As with all Fox's Japanese first-pressing Blu-rays, this title is expensive (the current ¥3,809 price is about $36-$38), so it is advisable to wait for another Fox variant, which will be identical in disc content and almost certainly be cheaper.

There will be, however, a "luxury" slipbox on the Japanese variant, so that obviously justifies the outrageous price in this case...

Specs over on Fox Japan's web site always only cover English (and/or original language) and Japanese options, but indicate the Fox BD includes English: DTS-HD MA 5.1 and Dolby Digital 2.0 tracks. It will be a BD-50 with MPEG-4 AVC video. Extras appear to be limited to the original theatrical, Portuguese and Spanish trailers, and as expected, the Isolated Score is not available on this release. The rest of the information is about the Japanese dub track for the film, which will be presented in DTS-HD MA Mono.

I've owned the TT edition since it came out, but despite how clean and detailed the 4K remaster is, I'm still bothered by the teal-leaning color balance. Although I've tried to just accept it, looking at it recently, I just don't know about the "correctness" of it.

Anyone else feel the same?

I think they used heavy noise reduction on this and then added some fake grain. It still looks good, just unnatural, compared to the german release.

seen a few in here mention that the sound on this US release is solid. that is unfortunately not the case. the German release sounds a bit better than the US disc but the NTSC/US DVD is the winner here as far as sound...it's especially evident during any of the music sections. TT seems to have applied a generous amount of noise reduction and the highs have been removed. gives it that nice "head in a toilet bowl sound" that no one wants. would be interesting to see if the '89 CBS/FOX laserdisc sounds any better.

the 5.1 on the TT release is also just a 3.0 mix that's been thrown in a 5.1 container. there is no data in either of the surround tracks or the LFE track. i always wonder if this is just complete incompetence on their end, or a manager said "the box needs to say 5.1 because marketing" so they just did it the easiest way.

i also don't think i saw anyone mention that the german version has a roughly 35 second cut in it at about 1:48
