On, it's own, this adaptation of All Quiet is solid, with excellent production values and strong performances from Felix Kammerer and Albrecht Schuch. But I do think in overall aesthetic its too adjacent to (the superior) 1917, and the significant changes made from the novel, in particular removing the homefront sequences and adding in the political subplot, make this a thematic retread of Paths of Glory.
As such, it's still very much worth a watch - but the 1930 Lewis Milestone version is better (and an incredible technical accomplishment that still holds up today). |

It's not really a "Netflix film", they had no involvement in the production, only distribution. They acquired the rights before production began.

All of that said, I found it to be an engaging movie, which was well-structured and beautifully shot. So for someone with no frame of reference with the source material, you'll likely find a lot to like here. But it is worth understanding the context of the reason for its controversy as it is based on one of the most important novels of the 20th century, and makes some rather strong deviations from that source. |

Still slightly confused. So if they are not involved in production then it's not their film to license out even though they have worldwide rights to it?

That's typically how Netflix works, on all their "productions," since Netflix isn't a traditional studio that develops projects in that way. It's 100% a Netflix film.

Any which way we're very happy to get a quality 4K UHD Blu disc from a Netflix flick.
...Of a top-notch winning flick of several awards from the top best. To Die 4 ... Cinematography, Music Score, Best of the Best Film ... A Must in any serious Film's Collections. This is no kid's stuff. ![]() Last edited by LordoftheRings; 03-23-2023 at 10:25 PM. |

I absolutely felt strong character development and was emotionally connecting to the lead and the other supporting actors in his squadron.
I absolutely felt the anti-war message of the film. I can respect that folks didn't, as I do think the filmmakers artistic lean was to take a minimalist approach. Imho this film is just as inspired by The Thin Red Line (or Malick in general) as it is by Paths of Glory. I'd say some of its design, and for me, some of its success is as a response to 1917. For me this is clearly the better film. All of that being said, I haven't read the book and I also haven't seen the original film. Which obviously effects our judgment in either direction. I can't wait for the day that I have a nice atmos system to experience the audio properly! Ill be grabbing the disc soon, as I'd love to see for myself how it compares to that pretty stunning Neflix stream. |

Most likely the producers only sold streaming rights to Netflix while retaining physical media rights. CODA made BD & 4K in Italy & Japan -- but nowhere else -- because its producers sold its physical media rights there before Apple bought the remaining rights worldwide.

I guess both releases (MPI & Capelight) share the exact same 4K disc content ?
Our Blu-ray.com indicates a same bitrate of 66,88 Mbps - which partly answers. |
