When the show started, Cordelia was the "cool" kid, Buffy was the "weirdo", and Xander + Willow were the nerds...

As the show evolved, however, Buffy became the hero... Cordelia mellowed and basically switched from the old cool group to the new cool group... Willow became cool... and Xander kind of meandered. Just when you thought he was becoming an adult and part of the cool team, he would do something juvenile that set him back two spots.

So anyway... by the time they added Anya, I saw her more as the geek/nerd who desperately wanted to fit in... which was never what Cordelia was about. Cordelia ALWAYS fit in... she was cool when Buffy was not... but when Buffy became cool, Cordelia switched to team-Buffy to stay cool.

Cordelia was always the cool one... she made sure of it!

Anya was always the outcast... she became a demon because of being an outcast... was an outcast as a demon... and was an outcast trying to learn to be human again. She was basically what all of the "scoobies" were in season one... trying to find out who she was and make her own path and trying to "hang" with the cool kids.
I guess both characters had different intents, you are right. But they both had the same brutal honesty and superficial tendencies that made them so distinguishable from the rest of the other characters. It's also no coincidence that Anya becomes a regular right when Cordelia leaves Sunnydale for L.A.

I also don't think Cordelia became a scoobie because she saw Buffy as 'cool' , mate. Cordelia appeared to be cool, but deep down she had her own insecurities that she would very rarely acknowledge. That's why she was drawn to Buffy and co. I guess Anya's exterior isn't as tightly guarded since she basically says what she thinks.

I don't think the scoobies ever became the 'cool' kids. Even by season 4, The Freshman, Buffy was still the same old socially awkward girl who would get told by her own lecturer that she sucked. The scoobies just became more accepted, that's all. With the exception of maybe Oz, every single member of the Scoobies were filled with outcasts (yep, even Cordelia), some of them who can't help it (Anya, Giles, Spike, Dawn, Angel) and others who openly reject the 'cool' establishment like Buffy, Xander and Willow. Nobody wanted to party with these people, they just became more aware of Buffy's status as a 'class protector' so she and the rest of the group got less stick.

New hope for a Buffy Blu release as PIVOT is going to start playing tru HD versions starting Aug 26th.

http://www.pivot.tv/shows/buffy-the-vampire-slayer

Hopefully Fox will see the benefit of releasing a complete set with new bonus features next year when Avengers 2 comes out as they can say from the director of the Avengers in ads for any Buffy blu release.

Well, they say "for the first time in HD". I'm skeptical and curious what they will air.
If it's really HD I guess the special effects will be upscaled. And I'm afraid it will be in the wrong aspect ratio.

If it's proper HD and the effects are upscaled then i'm happy, seriously. I don't mind if the effects are upscaled, I just want everything else to be in proper hi def.

The aspect ratio thing is tricky, but at the end of the day, I would rather have Buffy in proper HD in the 'wrong' aspect ratio than not have Buffy in HD at all.

The fact that they said 'for the first time in HD' makes me a little optimistic, though, considering they are ignoring the fact that the show has aired on HD Sky channels before..

I like widescreen Buffy, but mainly because it's often funny what appears in the framing that shouldn't be seen.

I download season 1 of ANGEL from the iTunes store just because it was widescreen. The framing has similar issues to Buffy's seasons 4 to 7, but it still works better for the show and is more consistent with seasons 3 to 5. Season 2 had fewer issues but they were still there...and still funny to see sometimes.

Ooohhh, I am now officially intrigued!!

If you actually play the video (that appears on the Pivot page in the link), the scenes of Buffy are definitely way ahead of anything I have seen broadcast so far, including Buffy shown on Sky's HD channels (albeit, upscaled)...

So, I have reasonably high hopes that this might well be a proper HD re-master, but I guess we will have to wait and see until after it is broadcast...

But at least the first episode is being shown tonight (the 19th), so we should know fairly quickly what we are getting.

Fingers crossed for remastered HD, and I can live with upscaled SFX

That does look pretty damn good, certainly way better than the fuzzy DVDs for the first season. Bring on the Blu!

Fingers crossed that this actually leads to something concrete! I just popped in my S2 DVDs a couple days ago and it's downright criminal how muddy they look.

They didn't look very good on my old CRT TV. I haven't even dared to see how bad they look on my new big HD one.

Done some comparisons, even though it does look better than the DVDs, everything is cropped. I know that seasons 2 & 3 can be 16:9, season 1 might be the only one that can't.

Damn. Comcast doesn't have pivot in my area. I filled out a a short request form, but I doubt that will do anything. I absolutely need to see Buffy in HD

Why don't channels that actually get into a lot of home get the rights to broadcast Buffy in HD? No offense to Pivot, but I just don't get it.

And then over in the X-Files thread, the naysayers about a blu release argue maybe Fox only maybe the HD masters to sell into syndication, but they are going about making their money by broadcasting the show in Germany? Come on, put these shows where people can see them (and/or but them on blu).

Grr...Argh.

Holy crap!!! Buffy in HD?! Heaven on earth?

Apart from compression issues, it does seem better than the crappy Season 1 DVDs, although the cropping... urgh!
I'm intrigued as well, as I believe there were no news that a remaster for Buffy HD was in the works.
Hopefully it's all true, we should know soon enough!
S01E01 till S01E05 seem to be scheduled for the 26th and not today, though.

If true, I do hope that by season 2 the cropping stops and we get expanded sides instead, it's just too painful to watch top and bottom cropped.

If they got the negatives to do their "HD" episodes, there shouldn't be any cropping when they get to season 2. These caps from the beginning of season 2 show that it can be opened up:

If season 2 does end up being cropped, I think it's safe to assume they're just upscaling.

Yes, I know that, for both seasons 2 and 3, hence why I mentioned it
Also on some DVD bonus, there was "proof" of special effects being rendered in 16:9, for season 3 at least.

I don't think (and hope) they will be upscalling. According to their schedule, they were already airing Buffy anyway and they didn't advertise it as HD before.

Now that they are starting from season 1 again, it makes sense to advertise it if they got HD masters. So, hopefully there's some truth with that.

Who here actually has excess to this pivot programme?? The clips they showed in the trailer/tv spot looked a lot better than the DVD, though a bit processed though. Still, I am getting giddy. Who's going to watch it tonight so they can report back tomorrow????

Man, very excited....

I get Pivot just like El Rey that shows X-Files. But unfortunately just like El Rey it's not in HD so I couldn't get a good enough description for anyone.

When I watched the whole series on DVD to me the parts that don't look good are the scenes without the effects. Like some of the outdoors scenes where they are just talking have a weird look to them.

What surprises me is that they have sold the HD license to Pivot...A company I have never heard of, and probably not one of the most subscribed to channels out there.

I doubt it will reach a massive audience where it is now...HD Buffy really needed to be snapped up by one of the "big boys" out there that anyone can access/subscribe to...Netflix, Hulu, Amazon etc. I'd have signed up to any of those streaming services in a flash if they had announced they were getting Buffy in HD

Never heard of PIVOT, looking forward to hearing back what is said about the quality!
If these are actual HD transfers I would assume Fox ushered them? In that case they may be planning something. I mean can another company/studio do HD scans of these when Fox owns them? I'd assume Fox is not only aware of these HD scans (if they are HD scans), but that they are also behind them - in which case a blu-ray collection could be out next year.

I'm also just getting my hopes up!
