The Aspect ratio to me looks great. I think Buffy looks amazing in Widescreen. Joss has been quite ignorant about it and never even watched one episode in widescreen, I understand he thinks it should be done OAR but he hasn't even seen it so he wont even indulge in our side of the argument.

The bigger issue here is definitely colouring but many wont watch PIVOT outside Buffy to examine their other programming to see if it's their broadcast settings that are distorting the picture. Doesn't Pivot air Veronica Mars, someone should record it and check against the HD version available.

Surely Joss has seen it? He would have seen the complete film gate area during filming.

Joss Whedon is being ignorant about wanting to preserve his baby as it was originally intended? Wow. That's just crazy.

I guess you haven't you heard? It doesn't matter what the people who made the show think. Their vision should be ruined because they are being closed minded.

Sure, Pivot broadcast could be the cause of it, but the fact that it changes scene by scene and sometimes shot by shot does tell that the color problems are in the master. Just watching the opening credits, you can tell something is wrong. The grading varies a lot and the scenes look nothing like they do in the actual episodes.

You're right. My apologies.

What bothers me most is that we had three responses of team members. They do not like this remastering, but they do nothing to improve it. I do not know what to do if they do not want to do something.

I'm not even sure that the buzz of our article was useful...

Ok. Next time I post something I will be happier! ^^

Well in all fairness Whedon is a little busy with this indie project called The Avengers and DeKnight is busy with Daredevil. I understand them not having time to really try to do anything.

Hopefully they will have some free time soon. I remain hopeful that they improve the episodes before this HD version is spreading worldwide (Blu-ray, Amazon, Netflix ...).

The team doing the PIVOT masters actually tried to fix the crew being visible in the 16:9 version. The problem being they cropped a lot of the frame to do so:

I do not drink alcohol. But if I have to dance to celebrate our victory, I need it.

Drewbee87 => At least they make something "right".

All the mistakes in the OAR have me wondering if they'd even bother fixing them for a 4:3 Blu-ray release. If they don't, I'll just keep my DVDs.

That fight shot got a bit too tight with them trying to fix it. Maybe something even worse was on the sides of the frame, I wouldn't know.

I don't understand why they would fix 4:3 issues, though, especially when they are not 'fixable' in a pleasant manner, like that one.

To me, having mistakes in the OAR is worse than having them in the 16:9 versions. We know the reason the mistakes are in the 16:9 version, we don't know why they are in the OAR. And I'm talking about mistakes like the one above being in the 4:3 versions, not boom mics or lights on the edges of the screen. Those can be blamed on over-scan.

Just two quick examples, both would involve awkward reframing to get rid of.

This Year's Girl (this one should be easier to spot, if they keep not darkening night scenes!)

The Body

I just don't understand changing something that was always in the OAR (and doing major reframing to achieve it), but not fixing something that was caused by the change of aspect ratio.

It'd be expensive, but they could try digitally painting out the mistakes. I just don't see them doing that.

That's like manufacturing a car and forgetting to put paint on it. When you shoot on film you can't just scan it and have a good result without color correction. It's impossible. When a show or a film is produced there are decisions made on how it should look. This creates a certain look, mood and feel to a scene. Changing this is not some minor mistake.
Ok clearly you think that I think it's not a big deal when I completely understand the issue with coloring.

The remastering team hasn't bothered fixing the colors at all, and we don't know whether or not it will be fixed in the future. It's just that I'm not going to really bother stressing out over it because it's up to Fox to make all the necessary adjustments if they plan to sell it. If they don't, it's their lost. We still have the DVDs to enjoy even though an HD version would be great.

This has been pretty much obvious except they obviously didn't mess with the colors from the film scans. If they haven't matched the colors from the DVD, then it would be easy to conclude that they didn't mess with anything else regarding color.

Again from what I posted before which I believe to be from what we've seen:

An atrocity I know, but I'm positive this isn't the final product and that they have some work to do by matching color in key scenes if they want this out on Blu-Ray.

Forgot to mention this was just one of the mistakes I noticed when watching Buffy as it originally aired. They must have thought "It's too dark and there's a bunch of leaves around, no one will see him!" I first watched this episode on a big screen TV at my dads through cable, I definitely seen him... lol
