I think season 5 is the best for the framing, but there is a bad headroom issue again as in season 2. But anyway, two other episodes from the fourth one.

'Superstar':

'Where the Wild Things Are':

"Excessive" isn't a strong enough term - this is insane. Fox should sue the remastering company.

They most certainly were done that way. The silly thing is if they'd kept the original 4:3 framing they'd have perfectly good high definition masters to use for television, streaming and home video and run into very little issues (everything has the odd goof here and there). But as the people doing the reframing are either hindered by things we're not privy to or they're completely clueless to how a shot should be framed.

Shit, they could put the raw scans on BD (mix with the composited effects) and I'd take them over this garbage.

And most of the time when it does come out on BD, it's rarely by the studio that made the show. That '70s Show, Miami Vice, Knight Rider, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Freaks and Geeks, The Monkees are the first to come to mind that aren't released by the studio that made them.
Actually Star Trek insiders have said the streaming services and broadcasters don't really care much about new HD masters. Either way it is an old show and, in their words, "they aren't picky." However I don't think BD sales are a super motivator either, judging by the slow sales Trek ended up having and TV on disc's quick plummet overall anyway.

I would guess the motivation is often just archiving, for various purposes both current and expected in the future. An attempt to keep the show viable as an asset for longer, as even if Netflix ain't picky now they might be down the road, and with how things are going I would bet dollars to donuts Fox itself will be a streaming service rather than TV stations at some point, even if it takes decades. They will want a large and as modern looking as possible content library.

Anyway, X-Files supposedly sold well so I would bet the roadblock to a Buffy release is these masters looking like garbage and Fox not wanting to pay to do them again.

I'm currently re-watching Angel, season 1 on Netflix(seeing as how the first season is 16:9 unlike the US DVD) and the rest on DVD. I thought the quality of the SD masters was bad while watching the first season on Netflix. The DVD master for the second season isn't any better. Can't say enough that I hope it also gets remastered, but much better than this.

I really hope. Then i hope they will look better than these caps. But Angel need to be released as well. They are sort of connected. Even with a handful of crossovers

That does raise a question... if FOX was smart they could argue to the company that did this "remaster" that the end product is defective or incorrect and either negotiate a cheaper price to do it correctly -- or something to that effect. Who knows. Perhaps they asked for them to crop as necessary and that leaves the excessive cropping as fair game. I don't know what kind of contracts they'd have but I can't imagine anyone seeing this result and being pleased with the job done... and they paid for that.

They should still have the raw data from the scans, so they could in-theory start-over, but that's if they've kept the data.

The sad thing is Fox could have spend a few more bucks and hired illuminate Hollywood and put out decent 4:3 versions and cropped them for syndication and streaming. Buffy the Vampire Slayer just isn't going to work in widescreen.

I can't imagine what the company would turn out if you paid them less!

Yeah, we'd end up with a flip-book version or something. Whoever did Buffy shouldn't be let near another show.

I would think so, even if just for archive purposes. Film will degrade over time, whereas a digital copy will never degrade and can be kept in multiple locations for redundancy.

I seriously doubt THIS remastering job will be released on BD. The studio is probably aware that it would be RAVAGED by brutal reviews.

My best hope is that they are using this remastering as a way of saying - "reframing and changing OAR sucks, and here is your proof".

Really I don't think so look at all the room there is in the crops above the show could easily switch to 16:9 and look really good the film looks really good already on netflix but imagine how much better it would be without all the dnr

I'm on s2 now and the show is still brilliant just finished passion man what an episode.

I dont agree with the excessive crops but this show can look perfectly fine in 16:9 its definitely possible to do I viewed this show in 16:9 back when it originally aired here in ireland.

the show for the majority of new viewers will be serviceable in this HD master.

I've already seen many examples of 4:3 shows looking great when remastered to 16:9 with care, this is no different. I'll buy the show in either AR, but not if it looks like this.
