DD+ came about because of a need for low data rate audio (lots of streaming at 192 Kbps). Not much advantage over DD at higher data rates but DD is limited to 5.1

DD on DVD is limited to 448 Kbps, DTS is on DVD 768 Kbps. There were some special DVD's with DD at 640 Kbps.

Several of my D-VHS D-Theater titles had DD at 640 and DTS at 768 or 1.5 Mbps (can not remember which).

IMHO, the audio for streamers (DD+) ship has sailed and most will continue with it. There was talk that Disney+ would have some lossy DTS:X titles. Most of the Disney titles with immersive audio are anemic including Disney+. The Fox titles fare much better.

Hey guys any word on whether inflation is hitting the physical media market? I was in Walmart last night and in the small 4K section, the cheapest movie was $24.99, many of them catalog titles

Picked up 300 for £7 a few weeks back. I’m in U.K having said that but inflation is high here also. Why go to stores when you can just order online?

If inflation is hitting the physical media market, I have yet to feel it. Most new 4K disc titles still sell for $20-$30 on or near their release date.

Walmart's in-store prices for movies are often higher than their online prices, but the store will match their website price if you ask. It must be a title shipped and sold by Walmart.com to qualify. Walmart will not price match other retailers.

I don't know that I would consider 300 a "cinematic masterpiece", either. Not even sure that I would call any of the Harry Potter movies masterpieces.

Not that it matters. If you like a movie enough to own it, it's masterpiece enough.

I was recently given the gift of a brand new Roku Ultra and I used it to stream a movie for the first time last night. I watched my 4K digital copy of Free Guy in Dolby Atmos. Well, it's a Disney title, so more like Dolby Atmouse, but still it was great to be able to enjoy Atmos audio with a streamed movie.

I enjoyed the movie so much that I will be buying the 4K disc for the superior presentation. Another example of where my streaming something led to a disc purchase.

Just watched new Texas Chainsaw Massacre on Netflix and it was awful. They tried to duplicate the Halloween 2018 formula but failed horribly.

It's in HD with Dolby Vision / Atmos. I'll assume if you don't have DV it will just play in HD without the DV pass.

That new show on ATV+ called "Severance" has premiered. First two episodes are live then weekly thereafter.

The King's Man is live on HULU in HD/5.1. I may watch that next or pop in the Looper 4K disc.

The quality is a big drag.

I have 1241 movies in iTunes but the quality is a major bummer. Hopefully they enhance it all at some point because it's only good for small displays and bad sound systems currently.

Give Dune (2021) a play at Movies Anywhere or Vudu, we watched via HBO Max and the Atmos was quite good. Have not watched our UHD BD version yet.

Free Guy was not our cup of tea but the image on the Netflix rental BD was very good for the time we watched.

The Dolby Cinema presentation was top notch and I will be getting it on 4K disc.

glad you liked it. I loved the games so I was hoping the film was good.

when I was young did the same. But eventually I realized it made more financial sense to pick the parts and have the Computer store assemble it for you. that is when I stopped and just did the occasional upgrade to my desktops/towers

the games are amazing if you like single player adventure games there are puzzle solving parts and third person shooter parts. Don't know whih of the games are included in the PS5 version.

Note that the movie and the games deal with different adventures.

No, it has Uncharted 4 and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.

I found Uncharted 4 mediocre and The Lost Legacy much better. Lost Legacy didn't hammer the characterization so hard at the expense of the adventure, like Uncharted 3 and 4, probably thanks to having different directors. That last setpiece is also my favorite in the series.

Box Office: ‘Uncharted’ Finds Treasure With $51M U.S. Opening - Hollywood Reporter 2/20

The video game adaptation stars Tom Holland of 'Spider-Man' fame opposite Mark Wahlberg. Elsewhere, Channing Tatum-starrer 'Dog' barked to $18 million.

Quote:
Sony’s Uncharted is easily finding treasure at the domestic box office, where it’s on course to earn a projected $51 million over the long Presidents Day weekend, including an estimated $44.2 million for the three days.

The video game adaptation stars Tom Holland — who is still in theaters in the mega-blockbuster Spider-Man: No Way Home — and Mark Wahlberg. Uncharted did far more business than expected thanks to younger males, the demo that has been the most likely to go to the movies despite the pandemic. More than 60 percent of ticket buyers were male, while 71 percent of the audience was 35 and under.

Imax and premium large format screens, the favorite haunt of younger consumers, accounted for a huge 36 percent of all ticket revenue in North America.

Overseas, the buddy action-adventure grossed $55.4 million from 62 markets for a worldwide weekend haul of $106.4 million. Including foreign revenue from last weekend, Uncharted is expected to finish Monday with $139 million in the bank. And that’s without China, where it doesn’t hit cinemas until March 14.

“Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg are brilliant together. Thank you to our sister company, PlayStation, for their incredible partnership, and all the many people who worked so hard to bring this film to life in a big, theatrical way,” Sony Motion Picture Group president Josh Greenstein said in a statement.

Uncharted is based on the popular PlayStation game series from publisher Naughty Dog. The film wasn’t well-received by critics but fared far better with audiences, who gave it a B+ CinemaScore.

Directed by Ruben Fleischer (Venom), the movie was conceived as an origin story for the game series’ globe-trotting adventurer Nathan Drake, played by Holland.

Nathan begins the story as a bartender before he is recruited by seasoned treasure hunter Victor “Sully” Sullivan (Wahlberg) to recover a fortune amassed by Ferdinand Magellan and lost 500 years ago. What starts as a heist job for the duo becomes a globe-trotting, white-knuckle race to reach the prize before the ruthless Santiago Moncada (Antonio Banderas), who believes he and his family are the rightful heirs.

The Channing Tatum starrer Dog also opened ahead of expectations, grossing a projected $18.1 million for the four-day holiday weekend, including $15.1 million for the three days.

Tatum co-directed the passion project alongside his Magic Mike collaborator Reid Carolin. The movie, which skewed female and older, secured strong exits and an A- CinemaScore. It played best in the West, South and Midwest.

Inspired by 2017’s HBO documentary War Dog: A Soldier’s Best Friend, the film follows Jackson Briggs, an Army Ranger desperate to see action again after getting sidelined by a brain injury that induces seizures. To get back into his commanding officer’s good graces, he accepts an assignment to drive Lulu, an Army dog who served in Afghanistan, some 1,500 miles in his lovingly restored ’84 Bronco so the canine, herself traumatized by her wartime experiences, can attend the funeral of her late handler.

Uncharted will easily top the holiday frame, followed by Dog and No Way Home.

In its 10th weekend, Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man continued to impress, grossing a projected $8.8 million for the four days for a domestic total of $771 million and a massive $1.83 billion worldwide.

Disney’s Death on the Nile and Jackass Forever rounded out the top five domestically.

The weekend’s third new offering, Cursed, is looking at a 10th place finish with less than $2 million for the four days.
Apparently anything with Tom Holland in it is faring very well. Domestically Spider-Man: No Way Home is #3 all time, beat Avatar now in the states. Worldwide it is #6.
