That's true enough. In the case of my art teacher, he was actually quite a likeable guy and very passionate about the subject. I remember there was a small display case in the classroom with a whole range of different pencils, for example 3H, 2H, 3B, HB, etc, and he'd describe each one like he was describing a bottle of wine. And there was me sat in the classroom thinking a pencil was just a pencil.

My router is pretty old, about 6 years old I'm guessing; I have debated whether or not I should replace it altogether, but it seems to work just fine. Have routers improved enough to justify getting a new one?

Edit: The Mediacom tech phoned me to say that he believes the problem has been fixed; he said the issue involved a newly buried cable that a contracted crew placed incorrectly. We shall see; they tell me the problem has been fixed after each and every service call.
If the problem persists I'd upgrade your router. While it isn't the main problem, it could be affecting your already weak signal. I think with the exception of the cable boxes, we're pretty much wireless in our household. I have the family on the 2.4 ghz and I'm on the 5ghz in my room. With the move coming up I'm considering putting away my AVR equipment. The last thing I want to do is pack them away last minute. My One and 360 are pretty simple to pack away without issue.

My knowledge of computer technology is pretty poor in all honesty (which is why I haven't been able to offer any advice), but I agree with The Donster and would try a new router.

About 2 years ago, I went through a few weeks where my internet connection was hit-and-miss. Sometimes, I'd get connected quickly and other days it would take far too long. Even once I was logged on, I could be viewing a website and the connection would be lost for no apparent reason.

Not being really sure what could be causing this, I was chatting with a neighbour about it and he asked me how old my router was. I told him it was about 8 or 9 years old, and he reckoned this was the first thing to try. I did buy a new one, connected it up and have had no problems whatsoever. Everything was back to normal again. I'm not using it wirelessly, so it's connected with the supplied ethernet cable.

I appreciate the advice form The Donster and CV19 and I may yet do exactly that.

However, considering my computer was hard wired to my my router, I am not so sure it was to blame. When I bypassed the router and connected my computer directly to the modem, I still experienced all of the same problems.

It is an old Netgear router, but it is a 2.4 Ghz and a 5 Ghz model. If I do replace my router, my ISP service tech recommended I get a Netgear Nighthawk series router.

I have resumed hard wire connecting my computer to my router as that is my usual configuration.

Thanks for the advice; I may, or may not replace it. I am not yet convinced it is a factor in this as I have always hard wired my computer to either the router or to the modem.

Moving is a royal pain, a temporary one is worse because it means you have to move twice. I do not envy you.

It is nice that you have a workable plan to enjoy movies and games while you are in this transition. May the internet be with you!

I saw this yesterday and thought a I'd give it some thought before I responded. You know me well enough to know I'm very direct and not very diplomatic. While I respect your opinion, I don't agree with it. You are fairly new to this thread and are looking at things from a fresh perspective. So unless you go a little further back you aren't going to understand what's led up to this point for some us when it comes to Steedeel. It's like coming into the middle of a room and only hearing a punchline of a joke.

I’ve posted in here long before I came back this year. Me and Steeldeel had a very unpleasant argument that spanned a few weeks last year. He eventually came into the UO thread and after some snark we actually found some solid ground. He was even kind enough to send me well wishes after losing my grandmother suddenly.

I’ll say I don’t know if it’s escalated worse with others, cause obviously you are correct I’m seeing just this last months interactions, but looking at his arguments and statements seems like same old Steel.

Just seemed like things were escalating when he wasn’t doing anything more than normal and I interjected a viewpoint from current and past interactions. So please don’t feel I was slamming you or anything of the sort. If it’s worse I’ll stand corrected.

Twenty bucks says a year or so from now you'll be chatting with one of your neighbors and learn that the problem was an open box and some squirrels.

And how have you never seen Father Knows Best???

That was a local TV staple back in the pre-cable syndication days.

I have enough faith that you will judge things by your own interactions. I have been suspended once in in seven years so I don’t think I am anywhere near the **** head that Donster and a couple of others make me. I have managed to engage in friendly, respectful dialogue with hundreds on here for seven years without issue. I guess it’s just some people are always going to be at loggerheads.
There are folks on this thread that jump into movie discussions to spread annoyance etc and some folk seem to be suspended every few months.

As for your loss, I felt guilty about our argument after learning of your bad news. It was a genuine emotion, family is everything. I truly believe that. Things didn’t seem that important anymore when real people are suddenly missing from our lives. It was obvious from your posts how much you loved your Grandmother. I think you are a good person, that’s reason enough to remain civil AFAIAC.

Thanks. I totally agree and it has been 26 or 27 years since I've moved from one state to another. My wife and MiL have never made a move out of state. So it will be interesting on how well that goes, but we are going bare minimal. I know that the AirBNB has wifi, but it is shared. I'm bringing along a portable BD player and most likely put our movies into a disc holder instead of a box.

I seriously had that issue with my cable line. Squirrels chewed through the line on the pole across the street. Apparently instead of replacing the faulty line, they tried to do a half ass repair. Luckily the new guy helped us out.

As far as FKB, I'm surprised that's not still on MeTV? And I'm not 100%, but I think Vilya and alchav21 are the older active members in the thread. I know Vilya is a little bit older than I am

Those damn squirrels!

I am sure I have seen some of Father Knows Best, but it would have been decades ago. My remembery of it is quite foggy now.

I am trying to revisit the show, and thereby refresh my remembery, to determine if it is worth adding to my collection.

I cancelled my cable subscription 4 years ago. I discovered that I have plenty to watch just from my collection.

I am only 56, which might seem ancient to some of you, but it is nearly a miraculous feat with my genetics. I don't mind references to my age at all; I see it as a good attendance record.

We're only 4 years apart I'd love to unplug. I tried to when my son was still young enough to get use to streaming or watching BD's, but Xfinity and The Mrs kind of nipped that one. If you use an antenna see if MeTV pops up. I know it did for me when I tried to unplug and use one. Unfortunately I live in a valley. So I don't get a strong enough signal. I'm hoping I can get a better signal once we move. Because I won't have a cable or satellite box hooked up to my set up

I don't have an antenna. I have thought about about getting one just for access to PBS if nothing else, but I live in a rural area, so I am not sure how effective it would be overall. An outdoor antenna is out of the question.

I could only hope to get 6 channels and aside from PBS, they all run about 19 minutes of commercials per broadcast hour. When I was a kid, there were only 9 minutes of commercials per hour.

In just one example, the hit comedy, The Big Bang Theory reduced their episode running time to a mere 18 minutes per episode, beginning with their 10th season, to allow for 12 minutes of advertising in their half hour time slot! Prior to season 10, their episodes ran 22 minutes. Cable/ satellite subscribers truly are paying more and receiving less.

Adding an antenna would make it possible for me to watch seemingly endless Viagra ads and other pharmaceutical commercials. Nearly one third of every broadcast hour is plagued with these and other insipid commercials. Election year ads plunge us into an even lower circle of hell. All of this only reinforces my decision to cut the cord.
