No harm, no foul. Post what you like, where you like as far as I am concerned.

The Bogie Sith Lord and self-annointed thread cop may feel differently, though. You could incur his wrath.

That thread looks like it could be a lot of fun, incidentally.

I wish both of them well. Considering there are many VHS titles that have never even had a DVD release, let alone Blu-ray, then both stores could potentially do OK if they have these titles readily available. I wouldn't have thought there would be much interest in renting a movie that is already available on disc, but you never know.

The Peter Jackson video he was talking about called Dead-Alive (aka Braindead) is great fun if you like comedy horror, but this film is already on DVD.

At one time Netflix had the 2.39 version of The Keep and IIRC, it looked much better than my P&S Laserdisc version. But it came and went in a short period.

Sometime back someone posted that Mann did not like The Keep and that was the reason it never made it to DVD or BD. IMO, that is a disservice to fans of the movie and all cast and crew that worked on it. If lucky, one day it may show up on Twilight Time or the Criterion Collection.

It seems like a title Shout! Factory would be interested in, but I do not care who offers it, so long as someone does.

I'm going to keep buying Blu-ray. As for 4K discs, I will get them here or there when it's a noticeable improvement over the regular Blu-ray. I just hope they don't start doing mediocre encodes in order to force everyone to 4K discs.

I started to respond yesterday, but life got in the way and I wasn't in the right frame of mine once things slowed down. Let me start out by saying I'm glad that your internet issues are over Vilya. As Groot said, eventually the tech will catch up with you (and others in a similar situation). Otherwise you are basing your opinions on preference rather than experience Now you know me well enough to know if I have a problem I go to the source and confront it. While I don't have a problem with you or anyone else outside of Steedeel and alchav21, I can see where some members might. I can also see why a lot of members don't post as much as they use to anymore.

The thread has become pretty off topic and venomously one sided in my absence. That's typically what happens when members and threads become complacent. People become comfortable with like minded individual and the sound of their own voice. So the thread suffers and the conversation gets stale. It also doesn't help that the forum leaders merged, moved and changed the title of the thread either. When it was in the appropriate subforum we had a balance. Now that balance gone, sadly. It would be nice if we could get back to that. Otherwise the thread will continue to be the pro physical circle jerk it has become. Sorry to end on that note, but that's how I feel.

The old thread was 90 percent digital. How was that balanced?

Also, why are you trying to twist things again to have a pop at me? You clearly read that Vilya’s updates were the reason someone had Sent a PM. Don’t try to bring your own agenda into this.

Finally, you have a big opinion of yourself with all that ‘in my absense’ Guff. You aren’t the second coming, you are just a geezer on a Blu-ray thread.

In my opinion, you are the type of poster who probably sends those PM’s. After all, you don’t have a issue name dropping me. Let other people judge me.

Perhaps I am an acquired taste at best. I know I can ruffle feathers occasionally, but it is a capability shared by more than just a few of us here. Across all of the threads that I have posted in, the number of members with which I have had direct confrontations are in single digits. I have never been suspended in my seven years as a member; knock on wood as they say.

Just as when I am wrong about something, I want to be corrected. I have no desire to persist in folly. Similarly, when I misbehave, I should be chastised for it. I am a work in progress; criticism, even when not entirely constructive, advances that cause.

I have experienced streaming, even in 4K. My internet can be stable for up to three month intervals and I have used Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Youtube as my streaming sources. I have 98 titles with Movies Anywhere, too. I still plan to try out Vudu for rentals. While disc is no doubt my clear preference, I have enough experience with streaming to contrast and compare the two.

While I can respect your feelings about this thread and the frustration you have with it, I think you overstate the problems. I visit other threads and they all veer off topic, but they also course correct and return to the topic after their little excursions.

As for the conversation going stale, that could be in part due to the fact that there are just not that many ways to feel about the thread topic. People are predominately pro physical media, pro-digital/ streaming, or they prefer a ratio of both. The reasons for each preference do not vary much. We have all read them; the forum member posting their reasons changes more than the reasons themselves do. It just isn't that nuanced of a topic; we each have our preference coming into this thread and I suspect it as the same preference after having visited it.

I have frequented truly venomous threads on this website, such as with the announcement for the blu-ray release of Bowling For Columbine. The thread about that film was locked down multiple times a day for several days and some members posting there were suspended while others were even banned. I have not seen anything even remotely that hostile occurring in this thread. I have not seen suspensions or banishments being handed down here. They fall like rain in some threads.

I have in the past encouraged people with opposing views to post more often. I have specifically encouraged and welcomed the return to this thread that particular forum member with whom I have recently been engaged with in a disagreement. Do you think he would have done the same? Maybe, there is no way to know. I like reading different points of view. I have even learned some things from them. I broadened my experiments with streaming services as one such result.

I am reminded of an old short poem:

[Show spoiler]Once where a prophet in the palm shade basked
A traveller chanced at noon to rest his miles
"What sort of people may they be," he asked
"In this proud city on the plain o'erspread?"
"Well, friend, what sort of people whence you came?"
"What sort?" the pack man scowled; "why, knaves and fools."
"You'll find the people here the same," the wise man said.

Another stranger in the dusk drew near,
And pausing cried, "What sort of people here
In your bright city where yon towers arise?"
"Well, friend, what sort of people whence you came?"
"What sort?" the pilgrim smiled,
"Good, true, and wise."
"You'll find the people here the same."
The wise man said.

I know that poem well Vilya. I quoted it just yesterday when talking to the owner of the roofing company. And it is very true, you get what you give. Which is why I can see how all of us ruffle each other’s feathers from time to time. It is when feathers are ruffled continuously that there can be a problem.

Speaking of which. How did I know you’d be the first one to respond Steedeel? Thanks for not disappointing me. You aren’t going to goad me into this big back and forth with you. Love me or hate me. I don’t give a flying ****. At least you know where you stand with me because I’ve said straight to you every time.

Were any of you folks around in the days of DVD vs Divx DVD? IIRC, there was a site called eTown and it did not have a moderator of the forums. Folks called each other every name in the book. The only reason for going there was a few folks in the know would post there.

Somewhere around that time period The Big Picture, AVS, Digital Bits, etc. started coming online and eTown slipped into the sunset. IMO, CompuServe was the best of all public forum places and to this day no one has matched their forum software.

No Wendell, but I have heard of them. Outside of AVS and here I don’t participate outside of a couple of collector groups on Facebook. I really didn’t discover AV forums until I upgraded to HD Flatscreen and BD player back in 09?AVS members were helpful in choosing my 65” KS8000. While I stream in 4K I need to look into upgrading my equipment to 4K once I get the attic remodeled. That might take awhile though. Priorities. Have to make sure the house is furnished and the family is happy first.

I wonder how much longer they will keep making DVD. I guess it still sells A LOT of copies. But you would think with push to higher resolutions like Blu-ray, 4K UHD, and now I hear 8K might be a thing at some point; that they would quit selling DVD. I know with music they're still making CDs even though some stores quit carrying them.

Also just curious, do most of you watch on a TV or do you use a projector?

Projector since 1985, Kloss Novabeam Model 1A, currently a Sony VPL-VW600 (with true 4K panels). Hope to check out models with laser light engines in near future.

99% of all viewing is on a TV. I have a tv in my office, my work space, my living room, my bedroom, my bathroom... I always have something on while doing work and if I want to relax I usually just hang out in the living room or use my couches in my office to watch movies or shows. Or I like to get in a nice bubble bath and watch some Netflix.

I use a projector for "big" release films I want to see larger again or when I'm on my deck and/or backyard in the summer.

I’m kind of on a hiatus from properly watching anything until we get moved in and I work out our viewing situation. When we were in Washington I’d have something on in the background and would watch movies, shows, etc in my room on my KS Series flatscreen. Love it, because it won’t put lipstick on a pig. If the source is bad it shows. Hopefully it and our other things show up in one piece. Otherwise I’m getting new tv’s for the whole house. Which outside of my tv, I’d love to do

Projector for most big new films that I am excited about (blind buys) and for more casual watches like Netflix or Satelite TV it’s the television. Having said that, I’m getting Q TV (Sky’s new UHD offering) so I will link that up to the projector.
