![]() Purchases on all formats, including digital, totaled $7.500 billion in 2016. That dropped to $6.494 billion in 2018, down 13.41% in just 2 years. It is on track to be about $5.5 billion this year (mid year 2019 stands at $2.754 billion). The purchase pie is shrinking and EST's slice is getting bigger all at the same time. Take a look at subscription streaming's revenue over the same period: As of mid year 2019 (and before Disney+ launches): $7.474 billion. For 2018: $12.912 billion. For 2017, $9.549 billion. For 2016, $6.230 billion. Between 2016 and 2018, subscription streaming increased its revenue by 207.26%! Streaming's 2018 revenue was 198.83% of total purchase revenue! There are different things that can affect the numbers like new movie and rereleases. There is also pricing and formats that can also affect the numbers. The point is that as long as renting has existed renting has been what most people use. Now if Joe would sometimes look into the cheapies bin and say "Hey that is almost the price of a rental so I might as well buy it." but he does not do that any more because it is X$ a month and so that cheapy can't compare or if Bob used to buy that new BD that was 25$ in 2006 and now he is buying that new 4k for 20$ or he is still buying BDs but now he is buying the 5$ film. Obviously that would affect $ but not really change how people deal with films. |

I believe the best home movies ever did was ≈ 20 billion in one year and that was many years ago. All should know by now the very big elephant in the room has been/is/most likely will be, is pay TV (linear, SVOD and AVOD). Vilya posted some numbers a few months ago.

![]() Pay TV is still the big gorilla despite what many of our most avid cord cutters prefer to think. Its revenue is measured in 12 digits and while that revenue is dropping, their global subscriber numbers are rising. https://www.multichannel.com/news/gl...levels-in-2024 Last edited by Vilya; 11-03-2019 at 08:00 PM. |

Apple TV+ is fantastic. I've been binging all of their offerings this weekend and I think it's a bargain at $4.99 per month. They also threw in a 1-week free trial, and give you the option of pre-paying for one year at $49.99. That only saves you about $10 per year, but I can very well move those $10 saved into Disney+.

Something that baffles me is how streaming isn’t looked at the same way that cable/satellite are? For all intensive purposes you are “renting” the content that you are watching from the providers that you subscribe to. Your quality is only as good as their service. So why aren’t we seeing more pro physical supporters shaking their fists at cable/satellite providers too

Besides, cable and sat promote sitting around the living room tv. For me personally, it’s stuff like short form and streaming stuff on phones that makes streaming a negative. Let me give you an example. (This one’s for Vilya). It’s pretty much accepted now imo, by the big guns like NBA, NHL MLB that millenials don’t particularly want to watch a full live game. This is something their research has shown and when the rights go up for sale, their is already talk of offering content in sections as a micro transaction. Say, the last quarter of a game or if you have a gamble on a sporting event, maybe watch a section that interests you in regards to that. Instead of paying £7 for a game, you pay £2 for a section of that game. Maybe you dint have time to watch the second ha,f, so you just watch the first for half price? That type of thing. This is because millennials have shorter attention spans and don’t want to commit to long games of any sport. It’s stuff like this that makes fans of traditional entertainment nervous, there is nothing stopping the industry from doing this for regular tv and film also. One way or another, they are going to screw things. |

Why wouldn't it be, though? The interface is great and so is the programming that I have seen so far. That doesn't mean I care for every single offering they have. Why so hostile? You need to face that there are folks that can co-exist within the physical/digital realm. |

What is funny is certain aspects of my life are about to change and I’m leaving a majority of the discs I’ve collected over the years, but I’ll still have my digital copies until I can recoup my losses and upgrade a 4K player and discs.

Millenials have perfectly normal attention spans as science has already proven. Repeating this stupidity about millenials having shorter attention spans only reinforces what a science denying flat earther you are. ![]() ![]() ![]() What millenials don't have is your obsession with how other people watch content or your intolerance for anyone with different viewing preferences. I don't want to watch entire games, either. Sports games contain long stretches of abject tedium. I have always preferred to just watch the highlight reel where I can have the whole multi-hour snoozefest distilled into the 10 minutes of meaningful action that actually mattered. I watch highlights now same as I watched them 40 years ago; it has NOTHING to do with attention spans. It has everything to do with overlong boring games. Options are good things; they are VOLUNTARY choices. They are not fearsome; they are awesome. My option of just watching the highlight reel for all of these decades has had no impact on your ability to slog through the whole game. No one is going to take away your option to endure the whole tedious affair. Millenials are not going to "screw things"; they could not possibly screw them up more than our generations have. We aren't exactly leaving them a world in great shape. Movies and TV shows are going to be fine long after you are wearing diapers again and are being spoon fed by an orderly at the old conspiracy theorist's home. Give this nonsense a rest before it puts you into a rest home before your time. You worry enough to give an ulcer an ulcer and you do so needlessly. If I were to collect all of your delusional predictions into one volume, I would have to borrow from Shakespeare and name it Much Ado About Nothing. Last edited by Vilya; 11-04-2019 at 05:08 AM. |
