Luckily, they got wind of the printing error before it went into final production.

I'll take a delay over a disc replacement programme any day. And if the errors are in print materials those never get replaced. Plus with a disc replacement half the people that buy it never hear about it and then the aftermarket it full of dodgy discs, and you're probably stuck with the replacement programme being closed.
Mistakes happen, fixing them before they leak out to market is definitely the way to go.

John Amplas is going to be at Living Dead Weekend in PA at the Monroeville Mall this year. Thinking I might head over and have my copy signed!

Excellent. I'm heading to the event this year so I might just do the same thing and get him to sign my copy

I'm not sure I like how Martin and Dawn were color corrected. I understand it's only one frame but still, it's quite representative of the whole thing.

2012 Synapse Films Document of the Dead Blu-ray (Probably lifted from an interpositive.)

2023 Second Sight Films Blu-ray. (Dupe Negative)

2016 Midnight Factory Blu-ray. (Interpositive)

2020 Second Sight Films Blu-ray (OCN)

Martin is not from "OCN". But both were approved by Mike Gornick so take it up with him Danny!

I work with DPs every weeks. I can have them approve almost anything. Especially when they're not sitting right next to me and approve from a MacBook Pro.

What I'm saying is that Susumu could have sent this to Michael and it would have been approved.

I edited every Martin segments shown on the 2012 Synapse Films Blu-ray release of Document of the Dead and prepared a high quality (35mbps) MP4 file of it. It last 8:06 min and size is 1.97 GB.

Enjoy!

It's unfortunate but it's true. So often a film's director/DP doesn't care about their own films as much as its fans do and them signing off on something can simply mean "I suppose it's good enough for me from the few minutes I've seen" or "okay, if you need my approval then here you go".

I also think it's a shame that a lot of smaller labels can't seem to get their hands on reference prints or even see showings of multiple prints to use as a rough guide when grading. I can't speak re: Dawn of the Dead and Martin (because I'm not familiar with what condition surviving prints of those films are in) but for something like the Hellraiser films from Arrow, the first two were approved by the DP and looked like a lot of other Arrow remasters from that time period that were also approved by different filmmakers entirely. Of course the perfectly preserved print I saw for the first Hellraiser looked nothing like the Blu-ray and was all the better for it as the grading on the print made the cenobite makeup look completely convincing whereas it looks pretty hokey on the Blu-ray.

What were the chances that these different filmmakers were requesting that Arrow make all their films look a certain way? Or was it more likely that Arrow were getting those films graded a certain way then merely getting the director/DP to sign off on it and possibly make some suggestions?

You're right. Dupe negative not OCN. It's been so long since it was announced that my memory played a trick on me. It should be noted that in order to create Document of the Dead, Roy Frumkes added at least one more generation over the element he had access for his edit and still, it looks quite good to me considerting the nature of the original element.
