It basically means that rather than shooting on negative film and developing it to a positive element, it’s shot straight onto positive film stock as a costsaving measure. Hence it being a dupe neg rather than camera negative.

Thank you, EJ.

I’m so glad they gave us this update today. This ends speculation/concerns among the pessimists that it was going to just be a rerelease of an old master, that RR wouldn’t let anyone have the use of his original elements, or that the original elements were in such bad condition that a blu ray release wouldn’t even be warranted. I can’t believe how many times I read variations of the above.

Sigh (of relief)...

I'm mighty relieved that RR has relented and that David M is onboard for the encode on Martin

Still keeping my Immortal Edition DVD for all the extra paraphernalia but this being pre-ordered as soon as it's announced as such.

MARTIN is probably my favorite Romero film (whenever I'm not watching Creepshow).

Is there any chance this edition will include the Italian version, Wampyr, that was edited by Dario Argento and scored by Goblin?

Unlike the the Zombi version of Dawn of the Dead, I've read that Wampyr is extremely inferior to the original version of Martin, but I would still love to see/hear it.

I tried watching the Italian cut as it’s included on the Arrow Immortal Edition set and couldn’t get through it. The quality of the print was so poor, the edits and the dubbed Italian so jarring, I just couldn’t take it. I understand some people wanting it included on the blu ray for the sake of completion, of course. If they do include it, I hope they find a better print than the one Arrow used.

By the way, SS confirmed on Facebook that this release will be Region B locked. No surprise there.

Even as a curiosity I'd hate to see an Argento edit of Martin. It's a deeply personal introspective depressing film, not at all about blood and gore and Goblin-scored set-pieces. It'll probably be like the House of Exorcism version of Bava's enigmatic Lisa & The Devil.

The Italian Cut definitely makes Martin a much less sympathetic character - I'd hazard that it's worth a watch for fans of the film even once just to see the difference of tone, etc.

Regarding the quality of the existing scan of this cut on the Immortal Edition, I could have sworn the opening credits are video generated - who knows where the print was sourced from.

I think Martin is Romero's worst film (yes, I liked Bruiser) but I really want to support the Godlike work Second Sight is doing, so I'm sure I'll be buying it!

I think Martin is one of his best films. Bruiser one of this worst. I'll also buy this release.

It's interesting how his non-zombie movies are regarded;

I like Martin and Bruiser equally and think they are both entries in his output where he tried something new and like both movies for that.

Of his Studio movies, I like Dark Half and Creepshow and dislike Monkey Shines and his Two Evil Eyes segment.

And of his early works I love Knightriders but find the 'Between Night and Dawn' movies interesting, but not working from start to finish. 'The Crazies' a good example of this, it's a mix of great scenes and amateurish filmmaking.

But at the end of the day, 'Martin' and 'Knightriders' are probably the movies that stand out the most outside of the Dead trilogy.

Oh my. Of all his movies, including his later output, you think MARTIN is the worst?! You know it was his personal favorite of all his films, right? Not that that should have any bearing on your opinion, but...

It’s my favorite Romero, with NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD coming in 2nd. I might buy DAWN from SS to support them, as you’re planning to do with MARTIN. I agree that’s a good philosophy.

I'm honestly not bucking the trend to try and be different, it's just that the last time I watched it (About 20 years ago, admittedly) I found it a real chore to sit through. I haven't seen a couple of his earlier films like There's always Vanilla, Season of the Witch or Knightriders, but I love the Dead trilogy, Land of the Dead and Monkey Shines are excellent, and Diary... and Survival were both decent.

**** it. Let's do a top 15 list, guys! (Best to worst, natch)

Day of the Dead
NOTLD
Dawn of the Dead
Monkey Shines
Creepshow
Land of the Dead
The Crazies
Bruiser
Diary of the Dead
Two Evil Eyes
Survival of the Dead
Martin

Like I said, I've not seen the others.

Never seen the Italian Cut of Martin. Will it be included in this new release?

Creepshow
Knightriders
Martin
Night
Monkey Shines
The Dark Half
Land
The Crazies
Two Evil Eyes
Diary
Survival
Season Of The Witch
There's Always Vanilla

I was lucky enough to meet George back in 2005, I shook his hand and thanked him, he looked at me and said 'thank you' & you're welcome. Lovely fella, huge glasses.

But Goblin's scores are usually really great. Didn't you like the one they did for Dawn of the Dead?

I have read that with Martin most of the Goblin score, if not all of it, wasn't original music made for the film, but just previously released music from their first album, Roller.

I don't expect Goblin's score to be better than Donald Rubinstein's perfectly haunting score, but I would still like to see and hear how it is.

Maybe also worth mentioning that the Wampyr track by Goblin is only around 90 seconds long (if I recall correctly). I own those two studio albums on cd but I'd still be interested to see/hear the Italian cut of Martin. I've never seen it.

On the other hand, I'd be surprised if Second Sight don't include Wampyr seeing as it was on the most recent in-print UK release (the Arrow) and they'll want this to be seen as definitive.
