I don't have a 4K player yet but I bought the limited edition set for future-proofing purposes (and because I really want the soundtrack CD). Might be some time before I know if I received a faulty disc or not

Mine shipped from Amazon UK. Should have it early next week. Interested to see what this looks like and watch it again. It's been some time.

I have taken a quick look at the 4K disc and to my eyes the colour timing is almost identical to the much-maligned Japanese blu-ray special edition from a few years ago. Disappointingly and surprisingly the image quality is also not too much of a leap - though of course the aspect ratio is fixed. I never had a problem with the colour timing of the Japanese disc but always felt it was very high contrast, and the lack of detail in the shadows was because it was an old transfer from an old print. This is where I expected to see vast improvements on the Second Sight transfer, but the contrast is really not that much better here. In fact some shots look a little blown-out in some areas of the frame, probably because they are trying to squeeze some more detail in other frame areas. I'm not trashing this disc by any measure, it's probably the best MARTIN can look, it's just worth setting expectations, and all the trashing of the Japanese disc should now be put in perspective.

I near saw the Japanese release but I think this looks amazing. Very few people had high expectations, I didn't. Its another win for Second Sight who spent years of hard work to bring it back to us.

The complaints about the Happinet Japanese blu were almost exclusively about it using an old Lionsgate HD master. I don’t remember hearing anything about contrast. I owned it and thought it looked perfectly serviceable for what it was. Of course I sold it 4 years ago when this new release was first announced.

It's not "almost identical" to the JPN disc. That's got a very dour transfer, yesh, but the SS is more colourful. If it's improvements in dynamic range you're referring to then you won't find many because this was shot on reversal stock, designed to produce a very high contrast positive image rather than the low-con high dynamic range of negative. This has the effect of reducing lowlight and highlight information so the blown highs and plugged-up blacks are endemic to the source.

I'm glad you're on this forum. Every time someone reports "bad news" for a highly anticipated release, you come in like a white knight and set it straight. I don't think most people here expected this to be a Dawn of the Dead-level restoration, just a good improvement on what was generally known to be a very lackluster existing release. Judging by available feedback it seems SS faithfully reproduced the original intent of the film's creators.

I'm not sure LostReels' news was "bad" necessarily, I just don't think it's anything like "identical" to the JPN Blu. Not because I helped work on it, in case people think I'm being super-defensive, but because I have eyes. Diminishing returns are in play for sure owing to the 16mm reversal source material (of which we're viewing a 35mm blow-up interneg anyway so a generation has already gone) but it's just a fresher, livelier transfer than the JPN edition in any case.
