God I'm too scared to go out anywhere at this point, with Omicron and @#$% flying around... I've just seen that Christmas Vacation was put back on listings and that's got me so tempted, even with Ghostbusters still playing.

My wife was pleased to report that my son and his friends have decided to get a refund for their Dec 21st booking for Spiderman. While I've always known that there was no way he was going, I was waiting for him to come to the realization on his own. He's a grown man (just turned 20) with a good head on his shoulder after all.

Everyone's been robbed of so much. My daughter has missed out on a normal high school experience, My son a normal University experience and Olympic asperations.

I went up to his room when I got home to cheer him up. He just shrugged and said " It's no big deal - I ACTUALLY PREFER TO WATCH MOVIES IN OUR HOME THEATER"

We had a Omicron case reported in my state on the 4th and in the same county that gave the infection a rapid spread to begin with last year. It's a shame because it took only less then a week to get here afterwords and I'd expect it's in my area already.

I have been limited to using a transit system, so even with one of the Marcus buildings outside of town, I still have to go through some interaction which is what I've been so desperately trying to avoid.

Obviously you need to do what you think is right, but assuming you’re in good health I’d just take Vitamin D3 daily and get on with your life.

I’m getting a booster jab on Wednesday and seeing Spider-Man on Thursday assuming that Boris Johnson hasn’t shut down every cinema in Britain by then.

I went to London to see Rocky IV at the Prince Charles and do some Christmas shopping last Thursday and went to a football match and pub the week before. It’s been two years almost. We can’t keep hiding away.

Yeah, people are free to do as they wish but there is no reason not to just carry on with life. I hope Johnson doesn’t shut you guys down. He probably won’t. That’s not happening here in the USA since it would be incredibly unpopular and never "fly". Enjoy your holidays and whatever you decide to do.

Good luck to all of you and you should all be safe in your respective regions. I'm confident that in my neck of the woods, we'll be completely shut down again soon - not soon enough for me, too soon for some.

I'm thinking we'll foolishly allow Christmas to happen for economic reasons etc. and then close down sometime before the new year.

Yeah, every region handles things differently and every region has dissenters. We have been the most locked down region in the world and I still feel we've often been too slow to act (as I feel we are being now).

You would go crazy living up here and you would be in good company. There are still many that think like americans up here. Not enough to keep us open, but enough to delay the inevitable past the appropriate time to take the appropriate measures.

Today, Ontario reintroduces weak capacity limits on theaters. It's just a stop gap measure to show that SOMETHING is being done until the eventual lockdown. Ironically, they will have no effect on the auditorium that my son was going to watch Spiderman in as it is a 19+ venue where alcohol and food to your chair service is offered.

A poor economy takes lives in many ways...suicides, murders, drug overdoses. You can't close an economy down for a virus that is deadly for a very very small percentage of people.

While closing an economy undoubtedly has a negative ECONOMIC impact, you will find that you most certainly can close it down in less violent, more nurturing societies where the uptick in the ills you describe will not offset the gains of preventing your medical system from being over run.

Earlier this year, I received a one week ban for suggesting that, given the rate of mutations, it was statistically impossible that we wouldn't see a variant that would lessen the efficacy of our current vaccines by year's end. I'm happy to have been wrong on that front.

Our positivity rate is hovering around 9% so we're not in as good a shape as the guy from London who is able to shop, attend football games and go the pub. He's fortunate that, for all intents and purposes, Covid is obviously over in that region and that the city of London is moving in the right direction with OMICRON not having any ill effects.

My wife just got off the phone with her father in Florida. He was exhibiting signs of a mild cold last night. This morning he woke up feeling much worse. Luckily for him, it can't be Covid. According to his doctor, there's not even a need for him to get tested. That advice seems almost identical to the advice her aunt in Michigan received last year under similar circumstances.

Contrast that with our experience here in Toronto, where my daughter (along with every other school aged kid) came home for winter break with 5 rapid tests. Hell we're giving them away at liquor stores. Maybe, the american model IS better - just don't test...problem solved!

My wife is from Ohio, where the governor just called in the National guard to handle the overflowing hospitals. I'm sure they're an outlier.

The cost monetarily of holding R at 1 is about the same at 10k cases a day or 500k cases a day. The cost in lives is exponentially higher the longer you wait if you will shut down eventually. The cost of shutting down politically is lower the longer you wait and the more people are dying.


One other thing if the government takes no action at all then your economy still shuts down. It's just uncontrolled and decided by individuals. Its very hard to sell a movie ticket or a dine in meal or plane ticket when that trip has a small chance of killing you or your relatives. People aren't lemmings. If you go out and say some of you will die but that's a price I'm willing to pay like a Shrek villain that wont bring people back to more risky venues while covid deaths are high.

It's kind of funny as we both obviously think of each other as lemmings and yet we both are kind of lucky to live in regions where our respective views inform the prevailing course of action.

I'm sure you have neighbours who think like me and feel as though they are living in a madhouse. I know that I have colleagues for whom the impending lockdown will be financially devastating. I feel for them, but am heartened by the fact that they will have neither the means nor the inclination to break down the provincial legislature in an armed attempt to ziptie our provincial premier. Now THAT would be crazy..

The most effective thing would be strong short lock downs. Its stupid to try to hold R at 1 and its also kind of stupid to just ignore covid. The most cost effective approach is probably to have the harshest lock down you can manage for a week or 2. Then just remove almost all the restrictions until covid gets bad again and reapply a short strict lock down as needed. It doesn't make sense to try and run most businesses at 25% capacity for a year compared to just having them take a week off every few months. The partial lock downs are also basically unenforceable while a full lock down is much easier to enforce.
