Short attention spans. They don't mind because they'll open up their phone during an ad. I always go ad free - paying extra is no problem for me on that end.

‘Shang-Chi’ China Release Unlikely In Wake Of Unearthed Comments By Star Simu Liu; ‘The Eternals’ Hopes In Question

Quote:
The prospects for Disney/Marvel’s Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings getting a China release date are dwindling. This in the wake of comments originally made by star Simu Liu in 2017 which resurfaced this week and have made waves on Chinese social media. In a 2017 interview with the CBC, the Canadian-born actor referenced his parents telling him of conditions under Comminist rule and referring to China as a “third world” country where people were “dying of starvation.”

While it was already iffy that Shang-Chi would get a Middle Kingdom date — the market has been stingy of late — its fate may now be sealed. The Chinese government, and the propaganda department which oversees film, have shown themselves to be mercurial to say the least — recall that years-old comments made by Chinese-born Chloe Zhao appeared to kibosh the release of her Oscar-winning Nomadland. Initially, Zhao was heralded in the Middle Kingdom for her accomplishments, but as soon as her comments reappeared, sentiment turned the other way.

A question mark has been hanging over Zhao’s Marvel title The Eternals, and the current brouhaha with Liu makes it seem likely that film will not be approved. However, it remains an open question as to whether the government or Zhao would attempt to “rehabilitate” the situation.

That it is. Their stated goal is 250M subs by 2024 for Disney+. That is also the same year they are forecasting that Disney+ will go from red to black. IMO, they will do it by the end of 2023.

The genius behind Disney+ is Disney's plan to own everything that runs their streaming service. They currently own 85% of Bam-Tech, the technology that runs their streaming service. They will acquire the remaining 15% next year which is currently owned by Major League Baseball. Yes, Disney+'s engine has it's roots in MLB streaming.

When you own the money machine, you get to keep 100% of it's output.

The only piece they are going third party is the storage/access of their content which is done by Amazon Web Services.

It is - but it also is a no-brainer. Pretty much every parent with kids I know right now just sees it as a requirement. It's super cheap for the amount of content when you compare with other things people spend on to entertain their kids. Then you have Star Wars and Marvel fans, and Disney Lifestylers...they have quite a base for the product they are offering.

That may be the biggest reason behind the planned mega-merger between Discovery Inc., which has 18 million streaming subscribers, and WarnerMedia, which has 67.5 million subscribers globally through HBO Max and HBO.

“We think that this will be the third global streaming service,” Discovery CEO David Zaslav told investors this quarter about the soon-to-be combined company. “Successful, sustainable—that’s our mission.”

-------------

I'm a fan of Discovery+. Didn't know this.

Wonder where Prime slots in to that chart, even though it's a different animal?
------
Amazon Prime service’s main perk is free two-day shipping. Streaming service Prime Video is simply an added value element included in Prime membership. Unfortunately for curious parties such as ourselves, Amazon has never officially revealed how many Prime subscribers are actively using the Prime Video function. In 2018, Reuters reported that 26 million U.S. customers utilize Prime Video, according to company documents. At the time, Amazon Prime had roughly 100 million worldwide subscribers.

I didn't know this either...

Like a musician/band that owns their own publishing rights.

They also have Nat Geo who has a fantastic series called "Drain The Oceans." I highly recommend it.

I liked it well enough.

I also watched it with subtitles and with low expectations.
