AMC price increases, more theaters, & fewer showtimes on the horizon

I was actually hoping things would shake up the movie theaters a lot more than they have been. They’ve become stagnant.

LOL - you didn't need a Crystal Ball for that one. The handwriting was on the wall, easy to read.

In the last 50 years, there has never been a year when there was no increase in a movie ticket. It goes up EVERY year.

Back in the 80s and 90s, I would visit AMC growing up every month and sometimes every week during the summer. The ticket prices were more than fairly priced, and low priced. Even the snacks, you could buy a popcorn without having to take out a loan from the bank.

It's sad for 2 people on a Friday night, it costs $30 and that was a few years ago. Now they're raising their prices even more?

Matinee shows earlier in the day help save some money. Along with sneaking in your own snacks in your pockets. Thankfully they never check.

Cinemark is my favorite theater at the moment since 1998. I'm disappointed they don't have more 3D show times though. At least 3 is good, but not just 1 per day. That stinks for 3D films.

Regal, they are rip off artists with ticket prices even for Matinee show times, but they do offer a free popcorn when you save enough points with your Regal card.

There are some smaller chains and theaters that I'll visit once in a long while.

I'll try to go a movie theater every time there's a movie I'd like to see, which can be several times a month.

2020 was the worst year for movies in the history of my life so far, and for many movie theater fans too.

2021 is slightly better thankfully. For now...

When I was in college, ticket prices were just $3.25 before 6pm.

My local theater had the same cost of a movie ticket for at least 6 years. I certainly don't expect the cost of a ticket to be that low now, but it was nice to see the cost didn't increase for so long.

These days, it seems the admission price goes up frequently. Even if my wife and I see a matinee the price is about what the Blu-ray will cost in about 2 or 3 months.

They couldn't even fix up the crappy Carmike theatres they bought then closed.

I've noticed a pattern at my local theatre for the past 10 years or so. Seems like they raise the price by 25 cents every year or so. But they haven't raised it at all since 2019.

When I worked there, the main thing I had podium workers do was ID R rated movies and check for outside food and drink. We stopped so much stuff from the food court and Target from coming through. Now that I'm not there, I'm sure outside food goes through all the time. Hell, I snuck in a bunch of stuff when I saw Old.

Annual Average U.S. Ticket Price

https://www.natoonline.org/data/ticket-price/

From the AMC Article:

Quote:
One thing that has already started is increased prices. An AMC ticket now averages $10.50 nationwide which is a 50-cent increase.

Price increases are sure to get people back in seats.

I'll wait for streaming, thanks anyway

My local AMC sells tickets for $12.50. I've never understood the appeal of eating something while watching a movie.

Me either. You can probably get a good meal at a chain steakhouse for the same price as a large soda and popcorn at the movies.

I can't watch a movie without popcorn. Even at home.
