Will watch this for the visuals / weird life-forms.

"Buff Amazon lady" is obviously Disney's new 'type.'

It's their 'new type' in that the buff lady character from Encanto made an unreal amount of merch money, so you can bet the Disney algorithm will focus in on that as a winning trait.

Still could be good!

Yes. And It's not following their winning formula. Which means that this may bomb harder than Encanto. And before anyone balks let me state that while Encanto is popular and part of pop culture, it certainly didn't light it up at the box office. In any normal time, it would be considered a flop.

This is very true. However, this also means it will more than likely fall flat with audiences. Disney's tried this type of movie before and the films have failed to find an audience at the box office. It's as though people only want musicals from Disney's animation department. That Disney formula has really cornered them in.

If Encanto hadn't been dumped on D+ after a MONTH, it would have made a lot more.

Streaming is the future. Soon Disney will realize that it's preferable to release animated films to streaming.
Once upon a time in the 90's Disney marketed every Disney animated movie as an event, nowadays their priority lies with the MCU, no one takes their animated films seriously anymore.
Encanto bombed because no one cared about it. As someone who was looking forward to it, I remember pretty well the weeks leading up to its release, no one talked about it, only few people did, and I'm not talking about this forum, but in general. There was no excitement whatsoever. It only became a thing when it was released on streaming because that's how people with twitter and TikTok came to know about this film.
Wouldn't shock me at all if Strange World will be released on Disney+ on Christmas as well.

Oh, I guess this is what explains all the anti-MCU rhetoric on your part...

I can safely say that part of what you say is categorically untrue. Before Encanto was out in theaters I was at Both Disney World and Disneyland/California Adventure. Those parks were pushing the crap out of Encanto. Granted, those are Disney parks and they are going to promote their stuff. The point is promotion was in full swing and people knew about it enough to decide whether or not to see it. The problem is family movies weren't really faring well during this time, pandemic-wise. At least that's the reports I had read. I think we are out of it now. And in a big way, as box office is acting like it's the 90's or something. Haven't seen this level of box office performance in over 20 years. Not since Spider-Man first came out.

Someone in a different forum wrote:

"Grace Randolph revealed in her latest livestream she has heard from a source that Ethan Clade (the protagonist's son) is an LGBT character and that "that's part of the father-son bonding experience when they go on that adventure together." She said there would be an LGBT character in Lightyear several months before it was confirmed, so it's likely this is also true."

Stripping down someone to just one layer isn't really representation. You're just highlighting one aspect and overshadowing everything else. As for the photos, they're just kissing. There's no real indication that Snow White and Prince Charming end up marrying, doing the n---y, and being parents. As one example. Nothing is being implied or suggested. I think representation can be ok if it's done right. And not just to have some box ticked off. A great example of that would be Sulu in the last Star Trek movie. That felt so forced and tacked on. And it's a great example of ticking off a box. Same for the supposed same-sex scene in The Rise of Skywalker. Useless and not even representation. It's so shallow and I think that's the worst kind of representation. We are more than just one thing.
This could not have been said any better but it still isn’t good enough for the "activists". Whatever. I might check this out some lazy weeknight but my expectations are lower then before. Also, if it ends up just being about "the message" and nothing of any actual substance or story, I’m bailing.

Dennis Quaid, Jaboukie Young-White, Gabrielle Union and Lucy Liu join the cast of Strange World and will play Jaeger Clade, Ethan Clade, Meridian Clade and Callisto Mal respectively!

It was confirmed in Annecy (via clips from the film) that the character of Ethan Clade will be the first openly LGBT character in a Disney Animation production.

Annecy 2022 Recap: Walt Disney Animation Studios Gives First Look at “Strange World,” “Baymax!,” and “Zootopia+”

Quote:
Heading to the big screen on November 23rd, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ 61st animated feature was introduced by producer Roy Conli, who began his presentation speaking French (his long list of credits includes The Hunchback of Notre Dame, animated at Disney’s Paris studio). Inspired by turn-of-the-century pulp novels by Jules Verne, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and H.G. Wells, Strange World tells the story of a family on an incredible adventure, directed by Don Hall and co-directed by Qui Nguyen (Raya and the Last Dragon), who also serves as writer. Both directors were inspired by their relationship with their fathers as well as how they raise their own sons.

Roy Conli walked us through the story, presenting what feels like the first act of the film. The story starts in Avalonia, a valley surrounded by mountains so steep that any explorer who has tried to climb out has never returned. Jaeger Clade (Dennis Quaid) and his son Searcher Clade (Jake Gyllenhall) set out on an expedition to discover what lies beyond the mountains, but get in a fight when Searcher discovers a magical plant that could benefit Avalonia, wishing to abandon the mission and take the plant home. During their right, Jaeger proceeds on the quest alone, never to be seen again, while Searcher returns to the valley.

Flash forward 25 years when the plant, named Pando, has created a prosperous community. Searcher and his wife Meridian (Gabrielle Union) run a Pando farm with their teenage son Ethan (Jaboukie Young-White) and their three-legged dog Legend. In the first sequence we were shown, Ethan’s friends pull up in a hover truck with a new pack of collector cards. Ethan is clearly shy around Diazo, who seems to return his affections but both boys are too shy to make the first move. Ethan is bummed that he gets a farmer card, so Diazo offers to trade him his explorer card, adding that it seems more like him. Searcher interrupts the conversation, excited to finally meet Diazo and being adorably over supportive of his son, whom he seemingly tries to be best friends with.

Conli filled in the gap between that scene and the second one we were shown. Something bad happens to the Pando crops and they are all dying, sending Avalonia into peril. An explorer named Calisto Mal (Lucy Liu) leads an expedition beneath the planet’s crust to find out what’s going on and Searcher agrees to join her. Ethan is desperate to go, but Searcher refuses to put his son’s life in danger. In the clip we saw, Calisto pilots a unique ship through caverns beneath the surface when a vessel flies behind them and calls for them to stop. It’s Searcher’s wife Meridian warning them that she believes Ethan stowed away. Sure enough, Ethan and Legend are discovered on board just as the ship is attacked by pink winged creatures. They send the ship into a free fall and it plummets, breaking through a rock barrier and bouncing into a spongy colorful world seemingly at the center of the planet. During the turbulent landing, Searcher and Legend fall off the ship and get separated from the rest of the expedition.

In the final sequence we saw, Searcher and Legend begin exploring the terrain, soon finding a character named Splat, a squishy blue blob with many appendages. Earlier in the presentation, Roy showed some test animation of Splat walking on 6 legs, 2 legs, and hiding in plain sight. He’s a really fun character and one that he promises will become a fan favorite. In several ways, he reminded me of Morph from Treasure Planet.

I'm interested in seeing what kind of weird creatures they create in this film, so it has my interest to consider seeing in theaters. Would be nice if it's in 3D.
