Default When will there be affordable bluray recorders?

Hello everybody, new to blu-ray I guess. I recently picked up the $129.99 Curtis Mathes blu-ray player from my local target.

I'm one of those "hold out" people who usually dont get a system until there are budget units out, I don't think I got my first real dvd player until 2003. (Recorder in 04)

I record alot of stuff off of tv, mainly because im cheap so my dvd recorder will still probably be used alot despite owning a bluray player. The cheapest bluray recorders I could find on the market were $2000 on up, and as I said im not really someone who likes to pay more than $150 for a unit (I consider $200+ high range) and that pretty much puts a $2000 bluray recorder out of the question.

I have a very large dvd collection... probably several thousand, although at least 70-80% of that is probably anime. The main question I pose is how long before affordable bluray recorders are out?

-Btw for those who says use a DVR, a DVR is not permanent storage, the hard drives crash and I don't trust them... Plus I like to keep my recordings forever.

Why would you want to copy a DVD to Blu-ray? Are you going for multiple titles on a single disc? I am not sure you can do that even with a PC Blu-ray burner and it sounds like you are talking about a standalone unit. Considering your budgetary constraints I would say don't hold your breath. The media, BD-R, for a Blu-ray burner won't make you happy price wise either, generally still over $3 a disc and I have heard there maybe shelf life problems with the cheaper discs. If you have the DVD just keep it, by the time Blu-ray burning reaches your price point they will no doubt have better solutions like putting them on a flash drive, a 32GB stick would hold several of your DVDs.

I have no desire to record dvds to bluray I think you completely misread what I was writing. I record off of tv in dvd but I want to record off tv in bluray.

I did not want to record dvd to bluray because that is rather pointless.

American movie studios simply do not want BD recorders in the marketplace. In the digital age, many people would simply skip purchasing movies on Blu-ray. The manufacturers have acquiesced so far and are unlikely to introduce them into the U.S. marketplace. Your best bet is to burn BD's through a computer.

There already are recorders in the marketplace in the US. Two of them from JVC SR-HD1250 and the SR-HD1500, $1,995 and $2,250 msrp.

I was wondering how long until we got affordable units... not that I mind using my dvd recorder until then though.

I paid either 90 or 100 for the second season of Sailor Moon. Easily the most expensive thing I've bought (TV show wise) and never regretted it.

It's the only season I have though.

This i am curious about, although i wouldn't go this route myself anytime soon. What are the legal implications of this these days? I know HDMI is to combat theft of HD content, so would recorders be out of the question, when in fact they are just a different form of DVR.

I skipped the whole dvd recorder era, but i know i probably still have some unopened boxes from a previous move that probably have a few hundred VHS of tv broadcast and pay channel free weekends

I am not big on DVR's, and would choose this route if it ever did become somewhat affordable as their is some pretty stellar HD content on these days.

I have DVR but they are only temporary storage. If I want to keep something it goes on DVD lol.

I stand corrected. Blu-ray recorders at that price point simply are not mass-market consumer devices though. It would be cheaper to buy a new computer exclusively for burning than get one of those machines.

I use my DVR in the same fashion and would love to get an entire season on BD. Even if I don't get the HD audio a real BD will offer. Some shows I just don't care about the audio (Like the shows my wife watches ).
