Default Great article about the 4k restoration of Godfather I & II

Didn't understand a lot of the terminology here but it's very interesting....

Great article! It's very long and detailed so I need a couple sittings to read through all of it.

This before-and-after example is even more dramatic:

After:

Looks like the restoration is going to be spectacular!

Had a chance to see it on PPV HD but missed it by a day, looking forward to it in Blu.

Default Godfather Restoration?

You all may have heard about the new 4k restoration that was done to the Godfather films--the DVD box-set is being released in the UK on June 2nd. But I find it funny that a Blu-ray version was not announced? I mean what's the point of doing such an expensive restoration and not releasing it on BD concurrently with the DVD release? I wouldn't have hesitated to import it no matter what the cost.
Because of this, I'm tempted to buy the Limited Edition Steel-book version of the restored Godfather trilogy that is up for pre-order at amazon (UK). Should I hold out and wait for the Blu-ray, or buy it? I mean if it's only released on DVD in the UK what chances are there that they will release it on Blu-ray in the US?

Depends, if you don't mind double dipping in the future, and Godfather is one your all time favorites, go for it. Me, I'm only buying movies in blu.

You have to realize that Paramount just got back into the blu game and have to find space in the production line to get movies out. Plus, seeing that this is one of those "high profile" titles, it is likely we will not see the blu version this year due to the small blu market. Over at the digitalbits, I believe there was an article either in the rumor mill or in the daily bits stating that it may possibly see release at the end of the year. I have a feeling that this will be a fall release in 2009 just in time for the holidays. (IMHO)

I'm alittle concerned about the most recent post on Digital Bits about this subject. Hunt has there is "a decent chance" this will be released on Blu-Ray. A decent chance is kind of disappointing to me. At a time when I am trying to replace most of my SD-DVDs I really don't want to buy this DVD boxset, because I will just be disappointed it isn't Blu.

The Godfather Triology is certainly in my Top 5 Blu-Ray wants, and I was hoping to hear there is better than a chance. I mean really what is the point in doing such an expensive restoration just so the image can be downgraded by SD.

Even with the 4k restoration I think people should temper their expectations about the BD picture quality of Godfather I and II. This is not going to make anyone think it looks like I, Robot for example. Apparently the original elements were in very bad shape before this restoration. I'm just glad true classics will look as good as they can.

Yes, but unlike I, Robot the film itself is actually watchable.
