Fortunately, I don't own very many Fox movies on Blu-Ray that haven't already been upgraded to 4K. It would be nice to have the Night at the Museum Trilogy, The Wolverine Extended Cut, the original Planet of the Apes Pentalogy, and Home Alone 2 in 4K, but, whatever.

But come on, you have to admit it's odd: Disnee have treated older non-franchise (and even some franchise) catalogue live-action stuff like the ****ing plague on UHD, and will apparently continue to do so, yet out of all that stuff they pick this? We wondered before if they were using D+ viewing figures and whatnot to decide these things but people are usually very particular aboot holiday movies, it's not like they're watching them all year round so they must've been slamming this hard on D+ to create the sort of viewing figures that would tempt the Mouse into bothering to make a UHD.

It's not that I don't get it because I do, my main puzzlement is more to do with them using that rationale to release two "old movies" on UHD but then shutting up shop completely after that without even bothering to take into account the sales figures for those discs. Just...why?
It definitely seems odd that they would release only two movies before shutting down completely. Why do it at all? But if they ARE going to do it, these two movies seem like logical choices to me, especially since the holiday season is coming up so they’re positioned to sell well.

Aliens, The Sound of Music, The Omen, The Sixth Sense, Tombstone, Heat, Fight Club, Moulin Rouge, Edward Scissorhands, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Cast Away, Butch Kassidy, Home Alone 2, Planet of the Apes, The Rocketeer, Dick Tracey, Signs, Tron, Chronicles of Narnia, Pirates of the Carrabean to name just a few, Fox has literally hundreds of films, it's been around for 80 years.
I think they will release the Pirates movies eventually especially if they make another one, but the rest, yeah not looking good

Yeah I mean those are fun popcorn films, just more examples of movies we might not get on 4k now due to who controls the rights to distribute now.

I won't have to worry about new movies not coming out on 4K Blu-Ray, right?

"Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" is one of my favorite films ever, and I was really hoping we would see it on 4K Blu-ray, but I guess this probably won't happen now...

Are 4K digital films even worth it buying? I never bought one before, but I imagine they're more compressed and therefore have lower quality?

To me digital is only good for reference, like checking a scene because someone asked a question about that or whatever so it's comfortable to have it on my device, but I personally wouldn't buy digital movies just for the sake of it. I'd prefer to watch the Blu-ray over them.

It's hard for me to tell how compressed it is when I'm at a good enough distance from my TV.

A lot of people will tell you no, streaming sucks, you don't own it. etc.

I don't think digital sales are worth dropping 15-20 bucks on. They do go on sale for 7.99-9.99 sometimes on Apple TV or VUDU, which then I tend to bite. The quality of UHD streaming is actually quite good-- not as good as a disc, at least when the transfer on disc has decent compression, but UHD streaming is a big upgrade when compared to older HD streams from 10 years back.

it also isn't just Disney. While Paramount is still releasing Blu rays they seemed to have given up on UHD discs with the exception of the Tom Cruise movies (maybe Cruise himself asked for those releases?) and are only putting out the 4K masters in HDR and Dolby Vision digitally. MGM also seems to have given up on home video though at least they are willing to license to Criterion/Arrow.

Luckily Sony, WB, and Universal are still in the home video game. Who would have thought Universal would become one of the best home video studios one day?

It's a re-release. Paramount has huge catalogue content but rarely does any releases on 4K.

I hope they do. Given how there's no more new releases for this year I hope we get some good catalogue content for q4

Fox owned quite a few other classic movies that will now never see the light of day.
