Blu-ray is down only 2.5%, with 6 weeks left to go. Last year it was down 6.8% (for the whole year). So while it might not make it into positive territory by the end of the year, it's a cinch that the decline will be less than last year. Since July Blu-ray has been up 3.6%.

I'd be curious what retailers or avenues NPD is capturing for the total disc sales revenue. With a lot of Blu-ray releases shifting to smaller labels (Vinegar Syndrome, Twilight Time, Severin, Code Red, Dark Force, Scorpion; along with other label releases which may or may not be sold at retail locations) and online sales through smaller online portals, how much of the Blu-ray revenue isn't being captured?

Blu-ray is alive and well. Black Friday sales up 8.9% over last year and over $100 million for the week.
![]() According to Media Play news, the average price paid per BD SKU was actually 5.0% higher than last year BF week, so it's not like it was deeper discounting that resulted in increased sales. |

Who knows, but my guess is that even though those smaller labels (those being sold exclusively in obscure websites or 3rd party Amazon) account for a sizable portion of releases, the units sold per release is very small. Which means they account for probably less than 5% of overall revenue. Most Blu-ray sales revenue comes from new and recent releases from the major labels, perhaps as much as 75%. |

Going to guess the UHD price bump. First $100M week in 2 years and within spitting distance of 2017 sales. Last years Dec was so abominably bad compared to prior years, even with a modest rebound toward average Dec HD should surpass 2017 total. It's probably a bit much to ask to get back to 2B for the year. A $700M Q4 would take a 380M December), but not out of the question with CM week and a full "10 day pre-Christmas last week" I just wish there were a couple big releases to anchor to. 1900-1950 is realistic with any sort of improvement in December |

Blu-ray down only 1.84% for the year. Needs to make up $30 million over the next 5 weeks to finish even with last year, an average of $57 million per week. Very doable I think.

I think a decimal point is missing, though, in that per week average to reach the break even goal. Last edited by Vilya; 12-07-2018 at 03:29 PM. |

Dec 2017 approx 255M sales in 5 weeks (51M per week) so either 57M/week or 5.7M more per week works. Dec 2017 was a historically bad Dec for Bluray -- no big releases at all in Dec to anchor usual Christmas buying. It was 25% worse than the worst Dec since 2009. It was only 20% better than 2008 and over 40% lower than the average December since 2009 (approx 400M). |
