You didn’t read what i said i said is universal the reason they couldn’t try to work out a deal with those two studios to get the footage.

Conforming from different sources is a lot of work, and we'll complain if there's so much as a frame out of place. I can't say I blame SF for passing on that this time. |

Why is that though? I mean they both work with Shout. Is this some kind of dispute between the parties that left one in the red somehow when AOD was released theateically?

MGM Hong Kong has been stingy with the elements they own. Anchor Bay was not aware film elements existed because MGM stayed silent when AB looked for them. Then they released their own disc. Studio Canal licensed this from them and only got an SD master. Scream was provided an HD master but couldn’t alter it. |

It seems like it would have worked to do the international cut in UHD, since that was remastered in 4K as well, just from the interpositive. Either make a 4K disc from that source or go the extra mile and do the reverse of the Blu-ray release, using the new remaster except for the exclusive footage.
But that could be wrong, maybe they only have the digital 1080p sdr master of that scan and couldn’t do it. And the directors cut is definitely out, since that was clearly sourced from an older HD master. |

Definitely a matter of opinion. I don't agree with either of those being the best version. Looking forward to this release, though of course I'd have preferred the other cuts getting the upgrade, too.

The current HD transfer Scream used is definitely in rougher shape than the 4K master used for the other versions. It’s actually not bad, it was like watching a print at an indie theater or something. Plus before the Blu-ray I only had seen that Anchor Bay DVD which spliced in really low res footage that was distracting even back on a 27” tube TV. A new 4K transfer would have been nice though. Eh well. |

I have an atmos setup but I'm trying to figure out what you think Atmos would add to AoD. Some films don't need object based high speakers.

Given that Ash vs the Evil Dead solidified the theatrical cut in being the definitive version of the film, I guess I can't be angry that is the only one to get the 4K treatment. It is disappointing though. Still, since I never bought their previous release, it's not like I'm losing out by buying this. IN fact, the last time I bought Army of Darkness was on HD-DVD, so yeah, I think it's time to upgrade.

Army of Darkness is Universal in the US, while MGM owns international rights (through the partial Dino Di Laurentiis catalog they own from the Nelson/Orion units). Optimum (now part of StudioCanal) only distributed that old UK BD under license from MGM.
MGM has an IP for the international cut and was what Shout scanned in 4k. They also used that element to construct the theatrical and directors cut transfers, with footage interspersed from the old HD masters of the former two. Shout at the time couldn't do a new scan of the OCN (which is confirmed to the theatrical cut) due to Raimi's tight schedule. The directors cut IIRC came from a 35mm element Sam Raimi complied from a print of the international cut and all sorts of surviving trimmed footage. |

Oh yeah? Try looking up the UHD of ALIEN and say the same thing about 'The Director's Cut'. And I didn't say those cuts weren't in circulation. I said they should be kept in circulation. i.e. If ALIENS gets a 4K UHD release, I hope the Special Edition gets equal treatment as the theatrical version does.
