Shout factory ****ing sucks! I received my steelbook today and all the discs have numerous scratches!!! The 4k disc being the worst ugh..

I know I know..all companies have these issues but it seems like every shout disc I get is littered with scratches

The theatrical cut is my go-to version of Army Of Darkness and the cut I fell in love with. Better lines, the iconic S-Mart ending, and much better pacing. Man the pacing in the director's cut really takes a hit in the big battle towards the end and it just doesn't flow right for me. Just felt very off. To be honest I don't think I would love Army of Darkness nearly as much if the theatrical cut didn't exist. Just goes to show just how vital editing is in making a movie. Editing can make or break a movie

Definitely! Just remember the shitty director's cut of "Payback" with Mel Gibson. Or tooooo long and too slow "Gladiator" director's cut. Or shitty ending of director's cut "1408"! And Shining's director's cut (which is shortest!) doesn't have that effect on me, which the original one (the longest) has!

Just to clarify Gladiator has an extended cut, not a directors cut. The theatrical cut is the directors cut in that case. But yeah, I only saw that extended cut once and remember it being a bit of a slog to get through.
There are a few fake “directors cuts” out there though that really aren’t. Alien is probably the most famous, and then there were those Lethal Weapon DVDs that both Donner and Shane Black disavowed.

Kubrick authorized BOTH cuts of THE SHINING, so both can be considered "director's cuts". He apparently shortened it for the European release for purely commercial reasons, because although it was a "hit" in the U.S., it was still considered to be a box office disappointment overall and WB asked him to cut it down for the later European release to help improve its box-office chances, and Kubrick obliged. He also strategically placed the cuts in such a way that the film wouldn't necessitate a big audio remix, they could just cut the mag tracks seamlessly without jarring audio jumps.

Dumb and Dumber still takes the crown for worst extended cut.

I mentioned this in another thread...

There is one scene extension that is very funny to me:
[Show spoiler]the laxative/toilet scene. This scene was hysterical in the theatrical cut, but the extended version has Harry pouring the contents of the toilet out the window. To me, this added bit makes a terrific scene even better.

The other changes to the movie don't affect me one way or the other.

Agreed. I don’t know if they had to trim or change some of those scenes to get the PG-13 rating, but it’s one of the best examples of “less is more” and shows that raunchier isn’t always funnier.

Thankfully, it's all sound and no sight.

Received my steel book from the Amazon sale yesterday and watched the 4k today.

Since it was dispatched locally it arrived undamaged even though in a paper envelope.

No scratches on the blu-rays, just 2 very minimal scratches on the 4k. To tell the truth I never would have seen them at all if I hadn't been paranoid and checked thoroughly. Not going to sweat it as it played flawlessly.

I hadn't watched this since 2015 when I bought the Shout blu-ray (paid more too ). What a blast! Really happy with the upgrade. I will not wait 7 years to watch it again.

Finally got around to watching the steelbook and while it looked good I wish they could have put just a little time in clean up, especially in the first 10 minutes.

You gotta be f#ckin' kidding me... the Steelbook for this is only like $26 on Amazon.

I'm definitely going to be hittin' that up soon.

I don't think I've ever bought this film over the years. Now is the time.

There's various scratches and specks throughout the film so it's not even just the first 10 minutes and I'm not even talking about effects shots.

Actually didn’t seem to bad to me after the first few minutes and I think it’s one of shouts best looking 4k titles and I own nearly all of them. Overall I was very happy with the transfer.

No the Blu-ray’s are the proper theatrical versions, but some of the footage added to the “directors cuts” are in the deleted scenes extras.

Great Interview with Bruce and Bob Tapert on Mick Garris's podcast Post Mortem to celebrate Army's 30th anniversary.
