Dude, that's the only way we'll see NFL football in August... If they don't come to an agreement, we won't.

There is certainly a chance of a lock-out. It's happened before. Will there be one? No one here knows.

Sticking Points:

18 Game Schedules: The owners want to put in a new 18 game regular season schedule. That's two more weeks to sell out the stadium, two more games to sell to the television networks, and all of the rest of that good stuff, and we would all love watching a few more meaningful games instead of the preseason, right? Well, the problem is that the players and most analysts are against the change, citing substantial increases to injuries and a lowering of the quality of play. This is a side that has been bolstered by the constant news this season about concussions, other serious injuries and violent hits.

The Revenue Split: The salary cap for the NFL (although there isn't one in effect this year) is determined by a percentage of total revenue for the league. The players get about 60% of this, although the owners skim about $1 to $1.5 billion off the top before the players get their slice. The owners want to give the players a lower percentage, or skim more like $2 to $2.5 billion off the top, before determining the salary cap. The owners cite the cost to build stadiums as the reason they need more money, and the players are saying, since when do workers pay for factories? Considering that the NFL rakes in cash, new stadiums add tons of new revenue streams, and not all owners have built new stadiums, or done so with their own loot, this is a shaky position for them to take.

Healthcare: It's no secret that healthcare for retired NFL players is a complete disgrace. That's not only terrible for the current crop of athletes, but it's drastically worse for the previous generations, who did not haul in millions of dollars to play to begin with. The NFLPA wants greatly improved health care benefits for previously retired and current players, a lower amount of time accrued to earn the health care, and other changes to the system.

Draft Pick Money: The top picks in the NFL draft get ridiculous levels of compensation, and earn tens of millions of dollars in signing bonuses before they ever play a down. Case in point, the Oakland Raiders just paid JaMarcus Russell(notes) $39 million in three years, yikes. The owners want a rookie pay scale, and the NFLPA would consider it, if the money saved there is put into veteran contracts or retiree pension plans and healthcare.

Having litigated these issues, I can tell you that the healthcare for recently-retired players (lets say last 10 years) is not a disgrace when compared to the rest of us. Maybe when compared to their astronomical and ridiculous salaries it is.

These guys continue to make decent money in their 401(k) plans, annuity programs, emergency funds, etc.

Plenty of people who make decent money go bankrupt. Making money unfortunately has little to do with spending money.

Deuce owns a Nissan dealership that filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2009 and is being sued for almost $7 million by Nissan. I don't think he personally has filed for bankruptcy though.

I know.

Regardless, it's a shame that so many of these guys don't have better financial sense or financial advisers. I know a lot of them try to do charities, which is truly wonderful, but you wish someone would tell them: hey, you don't need that $3M house, all those cars, and the foolish business ventures.

This is why I no longer watch the NFL and appreciate the college game more.

You can't believe anything that comes out of the union leaders or NFL's mouth. The NFL does not get $5 billion without playing. They get their TV money for the year but they have to pay that money back with interest if there's no games. It's not like it's free money. It is a lot of leverage for the league though because without that TV money a lot of owners could not afford their stadium mortgage payments without the TV money. The union is appealing the Special Master's decision that the NFL can receive that money. It should be resolved later this month.

I am fairly confident that the lockout will end fairly early. Neither side can afford a lockout and both sides are too smart. In addition I wouldn't be surprised if there's a mutiny from the 500+ players that are scheduled to be free agents and players due bonuses that causes the union to fold early. These players were counting on their bonuses and will be upset without the money. I see a lockout occurring on March 4 but I think it a new CBA is signed by late March/April.

Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times Union reports that the Jaguars have opened long-term extension talks with free agent Marcedes Lewis.
Lewis, 27 in May, remained his usual dominant run-blocking self in 2010 while racking up career bests in catches (58), yards (700), and touchdowns (10). He had not scored more than two TDs in any previous season. The Jags should be a bit concerned with Lewis' sudden contract-year explosion, but they're not going to let him get away even if it means using the franchise tag.
