Maybe APOLLO 13? The screencaps for the HD-DVD look much better than the BD in current release.

I remember all the forums (except this one of course) having a majority of members (I would guess 60/40) who were pro-HD DVD. It was rather odd and ironic since Blu-ray had most of the industry support (and of course the PS3 which was the real difference).

All the software forums are relatively dead compared to this one. AVS more than others (HTF and DVDTalk get some activity still because they have such a strong group of regulars who have been around since the early DVD days).
People just gravitated to this one, I think partly due to the name and also because it has such an amazing database for everything BLu-ray. It created a snowball effect, IMO.

There were a few HD-DVD releases that reported to look superior to blu. Another one is The Thing.

A coworker had purchased a HD-DVD Player, at the exact time when Blu-ray prevailed. The poor thing didn't even know, there was a war going on between HD-DVD and blu-ray. So he ended up with a brand new, obsolete HD-DVD player! He couldn't return it because, the 30 day return/ exchange policy had exceeded.

I officially became a member of this site last year, but I've been visiting it since 2007. I don't know why I didn't sign up back then. Anyway, I was around during the format war and like so many as first, purchased an HD-DVD player. Stand alone players were cheaper and they were always offering free titles. I believe I got 5 just for purchasing a player. I ended up going purple like 4 months later when I bought a PS3. That was my first blu-ray player. I remember I got Spider-Man 3 for free with it.

Ha, yep, that's imagic. This is their "newswriter" who said he wants Blu-ray to die and claims there is virtually no difference between Blu and streaming, and no difference between lossless vs lossy.

He also said last year UHD Blu would never happen - and amirm jumped in to support that prediction not surprisingly.

Hey - wasn't planning on getting an HD or Blu player at all back in the 200X's since I wasn't convinced the format was that much better than regular DVD (and it wasn't really, on the old CRT I had at the time) - though, I finally caved & bought my first Blu player in late 2012 - and it's one of my all-time best & favorite purchases.

However, I do remember the HD/Blu format war to some extent - I used to frequent the Digitalbits.com site, and that was a big topic of discussion back in the late 200X's. I remember reading that some HD supporters were actually getting so passionate about the format that they posted a lot of negative comments about people who were supporting Blu-ray (and possibly vice-versa) - note this was anecdotal, since I didn't actually see evidence of this....

I was a HD DVD supporter during the format wars. I wasn't particularly too impressed with the first wave of Blu-ray releases. Many of them were 25GB Single Layer discs, compared to HD DVD 30GB. Videos on Blu-ray were encoded in rubbish MPEG-2 and Audio was just a measly Dolby Digital 640kbps.

HD DVD, at some point, did everything better. Videos were encoded in VC-1 and Audio were at least encoded in Dolby Digital Plus, if not Dolby TrueHD.

I remember Transformers was a very important release. Blu-ray owners were eagerly anticipating the Blu-ray release when Paramount drops this bomb that they were going to be HD DVD exclusive. I could feel the sinking feeling right after that.

Of course, after Toshiba gave up the fight, Blu-ray was much better after that.

Has anyone burned a HD-DVD movie to a blank Blu-ay disc?

I visited their forum about two years ago to check out what was up. He, or the other guy (the one with the white beard), attempted to school me in D-Cinema and DCPs. Then one of the other guys from yet another red forum showed up (whom I'm told allegedly like some other mods, received one of those *complimentary* HD DVD players back in-the-day) to bug me.

It was amusing …I mean, I think it’s evident I have a limited background, compared to them, in regards to theatrical deliverables…see this page - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ma#post9575271

So I guess, I really should have known my place….compared to reporters, and just stuck with easier topics like color encoding systems and color grading…https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...m#post10239360 <-to elaborate a bit more, after the automated process, the P3 color ->709 trim involves tweaking the brightness, hue saturation and angle….and I think I can mentally handle those lesser concepts.
