I see that that after release week that The Revenant dropped quite a bit, which is typical for new formats as the early adopters tend to not wait and get it on day 1 (although the Top 20 charts didn't reflect that since The Revenant got a 2% OD share on week 1 and that went up to 3% on week 2) Let's see how much unit share that translates into next week. |

Top three sellers for week ending 5/8:
The Force Awakens - BD share 83% The 5th Wave - BD share 75% The Revenant - BD share 89% Joy - was only 23% for BD. Blu-ray owners did NOT seem interested in buying a movie about a mop inventor...can't blame them ![]() |

Surprisingly high for The Revenant. So much so, that I wonder if it's a typo, since it was 49% last week and 52% on release week. Also could have been a price drop on the BD that didn't happen on the DVD.

Over the years I've stated over and over that I have always been surprised at the sales percentage of BD vs DVD. I expected it to be similar to LaserDisc vs βetaMax and VHS. |

Well when a popular UHD movie is only $6 more than the Blu-ray AND it comes with the BD as well, it's pretty much a no brainer that Walmart carries it. Why wouldn't they carry a title that peaked at #4 on Amazon's best seller list.

Because Walmart customers are generally looking for the lowest possible prices and low-end merchandise. Go to the http://www.peopleofwalmart.com site and tell me whether you think these people are potential UHD customers. This has nothing to do with logic or smart buying decisions. Blu-ray player prices are low enough that retailers should have stopped selling DVD-only players years ago. And especially for back catalog, many BD titles are almost as inexpensive as DVD titles. But Walmart (and other) shoppers want those $35 DVD players and $3 DVD titles and for many people that's "good enough". But I think that even after all this time that the mass market still doesn't really understand what BD is and they definitely don't know what UHD is. But if I'm wrong, I'm wrong and if Walmart can sell a ton of UHD titles, great. But is Walmart selling the only UHD player currently available? If not, then aside from future-proofing, why would anyone buy a UHD version? |

It's all about sales. Obviously Deadpool UHD is doing quite well on Amazon and Walmart has always taken a lead position on physical media. It makes a huge difference that the UHD contains a BD, rather than just being a UHD only. It gives the BD consumer a choice. Some will want to future proof. A few may even have a player. In any case they feel the sales potential is enough to warrant carrying it in their stores, and obviously they have much more information to work with (on what would sell in their stores) then us armchair quarterbacks do. |

I have always purchased my disc and tapes* via mail order or online vendors but there is a lot of people that do not feel comfortable with this type of transaction. They much prefer to purchase at a B&M for personal reasons. On occasion I will purchase at a B&M when they have a special on a particular title. As to Walmart, not all are created equal. Some (most?) look like a fire sale store while others look very upscale with fancy looking brick veneers and parking lots broken up by islands of trees and flowers. *LaserDisc, CD, DVD, D-VHS, BD and UHD BD |

But the space devoted to movies has shrunk big time in recent years. And even the biggest Walmart stores devote most of the remaining space to DVDs. The new release BDs that they do carry don't hang around long before they're rotated out to make room for newer releases. So, even if they carry a UHD release in-store, it will likely only be there for a few weeks. I doubt any Walmart stores will have a devoted UHD section like Best Buy currently does.
