You keep predicting that Digital HD will die but if it does it's a pyrrhic victory. If EST declines, physical will be declining even faster. Well, considering DVD has been around since Jurassic times it’s hardly a fair comparison. Blu-ray was always going to be a enthusiasts format, given the rejection of quality by the masses. Most people don’t even know how to set up their shiny new tv.

Q4 box office shouldn't affect Blu-ray sales because none of the titles in the theater were for sale. Look to Q2/3 box office to predict Q4 sales because of the 90 day delay, and this year was fairly flat. Q4 should always be strongest because you've got a wave of summer blockbusters becoming available for sale and (especially) for gifting.

I meant box office "power". That is the box office power of the movies that were released on Blu-ray in Q4. Of course those movies will be in theaters earlier in the year (typically summer).

Yes, there is a wider selection of content available for EST. But that doesn't mean it's not new release driven. EST has been getting two week exclusives since late 2015 and that has to juice sales. And to tie back to the Q4 issue, EST makes a lousy, intangible gift. Better to give someone a gift card than a digital movie.

Yes the two week advantage definitely helped sales. It's no coincidence that EST sales surged when they started doing that.

That won't necessarily be the case. Once EST starts declining, it could at some point decline even faster than disc. Owning movies will increasingly be a collector's thing, and collector's have always preferred collecting tangible objects. I don't think EST will ever overtake physical media in total sales revenue. There are other obvious benefits to physical media that I don't need to get into...

IT didn't seem to do as well as hoped but at least the week was UP for a change.

Really liked IT but not one I will purchase. OTOH, Blade Runner 2049 (4K) is in the cart . Has an over the top Atmos sound track. Sure hope Deakins wins his just due award for this one.

Yeah, that’s my first 4K disc. I will have the equipment to play it by December!

Loved IT, already watched it twice!

The first week ever that DVD is under $40 million and an all-time low for OD as well.

I think 2020 we will see BD+UHD sales overtake DVD in total annual sales. Next year unlikely but it could happen (DVD's decline would have to accelerate a bit this year and next).

Good chance we may see a 4 week period this year where DVD has minority sales, especially that period you refer to.
