British Up Digital Movie Transactions 87% During Pandemic Lockdown

New data from the British Association for Screen Entertainment (BASE) and compiled by The Official Charts Company shows that consumer spending on digital movie purchases grew by more than 87% during the coronavirus pandemic lockdown period through June 30 to £113 million ($148 million). The United Kingdom is the second-largest home video market in the world.

Examining the wider transactional VOD market, data from Kantar suggests 1.8 million new customers either bought or rented digital content during lockdown, taking the number of consumers transacting digitally in that period to a record high of 5.5 million.

In the 12 week period from March 28 when the British government introduced its “stay home” policy, digital purchases accounted for 51% of the market as consumers engaged with the depth of range of titles available through digital home viewing options, with 49% attributed to sales of physical media (DVD, Blu-ray Disc and 4K UHD Blu-ray). While growth in digital ownership was already evident, with its share at 29% in the same period in 2019 and at 37% in the 12 weeks prior to lockdown, the data suggests transactional VOD made huge gains at a time when many of consumers were forced to stay home.

EST growth in Q2 is the highest that I have ever seen. Conversely, the decline in Q2 disc sales is lower than it has been in many pre-pandemic quarters; it is nowhere near as bad as I had expected.

But q3 / q4 are the ones that are going to suffer

Q3 historically is a down quarter for HE as the Summer Box Office is in full swing and people are out and about doing summer things. This year is different due to the pandemic.

So far the physical media numbers for Q3 aren't looking too good:

7/4 – disc sales down 20.66% from the same week in 2019
7/11 – disc sales down 10.96%
7/18 – disc sales down 35.01%
7/25 – disc sales down 23.09%
8/1 – disc sales down 17.53%
8/8 – disc sales down 27.13%

We don't get any EST numbers until the next DEG report (Q3) which will probably come out in November. Unknown as to why they waited so long for the Q2/Midyear report to be published: Q2 ends June 30 - report comes out August 20. Last year it came out August 6th.

True, but it is an anomaly. Q2/Midyear Report has always been published first week of August. Don't see how the pandemic would affect something like that, if it even did.

11% down q1 to up to 30% down q3, kinda eats any gains q1 made doesn’t it

Just using the data in my post, Q3 is down 22.40% so far. We are about half way through Q3. It could go either way: down 20% or down 25%. Depends how the rest of August and all of September goes. I don't think it will be more than that.
