When this was announced it was explicitly stated as being a brand new transfer, I think that's why people are riled up about it.

Figures. This is the very truncated version Siren Visual released on their DVD only release before Anime Ltd released their first Blu-ray (AL said the rights holders in Japan wouldn't license the lectures out at the time). The full length lectures total nearly 2 hours. I appreciate this is the best package the movie has had and probably will have, but with a little more effort it could have been better and that's frustrating. I'm still keeping my order, I'd like to have the storyboards in large format hardback with the artwork collection and I don't actually own a Blu-ray copy of the movie because previous releases have been disappointing. This is still disappointing, but it's most likely the best we'll get...

Might as well ask this before the thread gets locked, what exactly is "Original SD Version Of Feature"? Is it any different than the Blu-Ray video?

Besides being in SD, no difference. Same film with zero differences besides quality.

Back to the disc itself...

I'm more than happy to have sold my dvd disc a month ago for $20 and essentially be getting this bluray for no additional cost. At least now I don't need to worry about disc rot for a long while

Is it free from the DNR/filtering abomination?

I don't understand why they'd include an extra SD version on the BD disc if it's the exact same "remaster", but SD. There'd have to be something setting it apart.

The SD version on the blu-ray is pillarboxed, it almost looks like the old Manga 4:3 encode just slapped on the disc.

That's just bizarre and stupefyingly pointless. But also not the first time. Manga did the same thing for Ghost in the Shell 2.0 where they managed to dredge up some ancient horror of an LD master and included it for who knows what reason.

so you can have both the original version and the 2.0 version on one disc that's why

If they had included it in HD then sure, but they didn't do that. It wasn't even anywhere close to being on par with the five gazillion DVD releases they had done over the prior 10 years. The only way I could ever see anyone touching that bonus copy is if they had some kind of perverse fetish for edge-enhancement and analog composite artifacts.
