So this all makes for cheery reading. No stabilization, grain reduced, and the newly-licensed extras are the edited versions of the lectures… and no sign of the commentary or making-of featurette.

I expected this would be a dead cert to begin with, but I'm torn now. I've already got the Japanese BD-box and the soundtrack CD, so although I want to support Anime Ltd, the only selling points for me are the extra book, the larger-size of the storyboard and the convenience of subs.

The good news is that there are plans to sell the books separately

From the FAQ:
Quote:
— But I only want to buy the books?
At this time we can say there are plans afoot to release the books without the discs included at some point in the future, but we have no other details we can share on that at this time. That said, as we’ve mentioned this is a brand-new remaster of the film that’s not been included in any previous release, and it does include extras unavailable on our previous Blu-ray release.

The lectures in Taiwan blu-ray back in 2010 was this truncated version too... So it's probably a license problem?

Oh Dear, good going Slant lmao

"Perfect Blue looks excellent on Shout Factory's release of the film, though it retains the grimy, slightly indefinite features that contribute the film’s brilliant depiction of blurred reality and illusion."

Nah the inherent "grime" has been smudged up. Nice plug there.

Sorry if I've glossed over the info: Is it confirmed the Shout/GKIDS Blu-ray uses the same encode that will be appearing on Anime Ltd.'s upcoming release? And the "new master" is basically just the old one with noise reduction applied? What a travesty.

Yep, exact same.

This has nothing to do with the quality of the movie, but did anyone else get a terrible blu ray case (as in the top and bottom splitting open)?

Thanks, good point. Maybe I'm a grain heretic but looking more closely at the screenshots and videos, I actually prefer the sharper lines and higher contrast in the new transfer, so I expect I'll just go for the UE.

Yeah, could be out of distributors' hands. Or the license holders want so much for the long version that it's doesn't make financial sense for any distributors to license, translate and subtitle the rest.

Is this released in stores or do I have to order it online? Best buy shows $19.99 but says it can only be shipped. I don't want to wait for this as I want to watch and then read the 2 books.

It's in stores, along with the other Shout anime releases (I mean, I went to Best Buy yesterday and got Liz and the Blue Bird, and also saw Night is Short, Lu over the Wall and Maquia), so I'm sure it's somewhere nearby you.

So, by the sound of it...the old Anime Ltd. blu is still the way to go.

That certainly looks to be the case. On one hand I'm almost relieved, because now I don't have to buy another edition; on the other, I was looking forward to a brand new scan of better film elements. (I didn't know the OCN is apparently lost or ruined.) The old Anime Ltd. disc is the one to have.

I just posted a new/sealed copy of the AL Standard release of Perfect Blue over in the anime B/S/T thread for anyone that is interested, I'm in the US so you can get it without having to order and wait for one to ship overseas from the UK. I have the UK steelbook release so I don't need the second copy, not sure how I even got two of them.

Just finished watching my copy and I was really impressed. I was really worried after hearing about "wobble" and what not, but it really wasn't that bad. I only noticed the wobble when she picks up the milk and one shot of the apartment from the outside and it was for a split second.

The picture is a MASSIVE improvement over the Manga DVD. I don't own the previous UK edition, so can't compare it. However, the movie looked fresh and vibrant. Overall, I think it's a solid release and I'm very happy to own this title on Blu.

Can't argue with either of these points. Was there any particular time where you noticed the telecine wobble was dramatic? I only saw it twice, maybe three times. Once for sure when she picks up the milk at the market, once when it shows her apartment, and very slightly when we see the stalker on the street. Besides that, I didn't notice any other wobble or anything unusual.

weird I went to two Best Buys and it wasn't there and said it was online only since the SKU was different.

I went to a local Best Buy, Target, and a Walmart, all places I regularly find Shout releases on the regular, and Perfect Blue was conspicuous in its absence. Best Buy and Walmart did have MFKZ though, but even though that's G-Kids, its Universal, not Shout. So it might not mean anything.

I've got one more Walmart to try today that generally has a more expansive blu-ray/dvd media section, but I'm not holding out too much hope.

That's me! Thank you kindly. This last year or so of Savage Dragon has been nuts. Pushing up on the big 250 later this year!
