I'm done with it. I have gotten so many defective discs that either skip a bunch of simply won't play. I report it, readd it to my queue then I seem to get the same disc again a few weeks later. Whatever I'll just buy it cheap somewhere on eBay.

I'm still a member of their disc club but I only get 2 discs now and keep them way longer than I use to. I signed up before streaming was even a thing. I now pay for their streaming and their disc club. It's still the way I watch new movies. I switched to BD a few years ago. I haven't had a bad disc in a very, very long time.

I still get 1 to 2 bad discs per year and the mail service is a wee bit slower than it once was, but it's still the best way for me. Most of the discs on my queue just aren't available in the streaming service.

Anyone do 3 discs at a time? I do 2 DVDs right now but am thinking about upgrading to possibly 3 and BD. Just worried 3 might be too many.
How much better is BD image/sound quality compared to DVD that's upscaled? |

What upscaling does: tries to simulate the same resolution only, but isn't quite as good (the fake bits are just dups of neighboring bits). I suppose, resolution wise, it might be enough for me for general viewing, if it weren't for the following: What upscaling does not do: everything else. It does not give you the full dynamic range of HD, so details will still be lost in deep shadows or bright areas. It does not give you HD color depth, so gradations of color will not be smooth (an obvious sign of this is seeing banding in the sky or other smooth surfaces) and the color will not be accurate. Edit: banding, for instance: a scene of a horizon with large amount of sky above it, the hue of the sky at the horizon is a different than the color up near the top of the screen. With HD (or UHD) color depth, you will see a smooth gradation of many thousands of colors giving you something that looks like sky. With SD, there are a much smaller number of colors available to render the sky, so you will see those as a smaller number of 'bands' of color arcing across the sky (4, 8, maybe 12 bands, certainly not thousands). The bands move as the camera moves across the scene, which is very distracting to me, but I know that some of my friends never notice it. Last edited by NotASpeckOfCereal; 07-04-2020 at 03:11 PM. Didn't know this is still going. It's tempting for the nostalgia factor. I'd bet people who get mail in procrastinate less what to watch.

It's not "nostalgia" when you can get movies on blu-ray that aren't available for streaming

So, which version of Red Cliff on Netflix is the 2-parter version? The runtimes don't give me confidence.

For a second I got excited by the necro . . . but then . . .
You're asking a different version of the same questions as over two years ago and the most likely answer hasn't changed . . . except that it's now even less likely due to customer attrition that someone subscribed to this thread has first-hand experience with Red Cliff. You need to perhaps call them but most likely just rent the discs yourself to get your answers. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I skimmed the entire thread before posting again a few hours ago. If you’re referring to the entire company, that’s not really what this thread has been/is about. (And in any case, I think "death spiral" is an overstatement.) If you’re referring to the disc business, it’s remarkable how someone has always been saying that for years herein . . . yet still here we are/I am, renting away and enjoying the service. Returning two discs today.
