1-10 I would keep, in that order. 11-21 is basically stuff I liked but didn't make the top ten and could be shifted around a lot. 22-25 I might fill in. but I really can't even think of any other releases from the year that I really enjoyed,
1.) annihilation 2.) mandy 3.) upgrade 4.) the night comes for us 5.) mission impossible: fallout 6.) hold the dark 7.) madame hyde 8.) a bluebird in my heart 9.) let the corpses tan 10.) thoroughbreds 11.) souvenir 12.) strangers: prey at night 13.) summer of 84 14.) blackkklansman 15.) you were never really here 16.) revenge 17.) mom and dad 18.) cold hell 19.) let the sunshine in 20.) claire’s camera 21.) happy end 22.) all about nina 23.) 24.) 25.) people who put infinity war as their top movie really don't anything about movies. sorry, not sorry. |

Finished of the layout of the list HERE for everyone to see, I’ll be adding mini-write ups over the month.
I’ve still got quite a bit to catch up with, so I figured I might as well add anything that slips out of the main list here so people still needing a few films to add have a few more recommendations to squeeze in before the deadline. ![]() Searching
Directed by Aneesh Chaganty Written by Aneesh Chaganty & Sev Ohanian Starring John Cho, Debra Messing, Joseph Lee Synopsis: After his 16-year-old daughter goes missing, a desperate father breaks into her laptop to look for clues to find her. ![]() Verdict: A real surprising thriller that intelligently utilises it's gimmick to various subverting effects. Searching avoids the pit falls of simply pandering into tech-phobia and instead weaves a web familiar to the 21st Century that comments on a connected world we exist within now in regards to the facade behind our online personas. Perfectly crafted and refreshing. American Animals Directed by Bart Layton Written by Bart Layton Starring Evan Peters, Barry Keoghan, Blake Jenner Synopsis: Four young men mistake their lives for a movie and attempt one of the most audacious heists in U.S. history. ![]() Verdict: A crafty true-crime caper that blends the very fabric of fact and fiction to create a film that not only comments on it’s own validity, but the heist genre at large. Thrillingly executes with Bart Layton’s relentless direction and sharp editing, American Animals makes for a complete unique viewing experience. First Man Directed by Damien Chazelle Written by Josh Singer Based on the book by James R. Hansen Starring Ryan Gosling, Claire Foy, Corey Stoll Synopsis: A look at the life of the astronaut, Neil Armstrong, and the legendary space mission that led him to become the first man to walk on the Moon on July 20, 1969. ![]() Verdict: Damem Chazelle had the challenge of making the biggest landmark achievements of all time feel fresh and unknown. By making the film more about the one step for man, his retelling of the Apollo missions undertakes a deeply more personal and thrilling adventure that managed to remain nail biting outcome despite the inescapable foresight of it’s conclusion. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs Directed by Joel & Ethan Coen Written by Joel & Ethan Coen Starring Tim Blake Nelson, Tom Waits, Zoe Kazan Synopsis: Six tales about life on the American Frontier following: a wagon train, a bank robber, an elderly prospector, a perverse pair of bounty hunters, an ambitious impresario and a singing gunslinger named "Buster Scruggs". ![]() Verdict: Whilst seeming to veer into the direction of a greatest hits territory with it’s variety of tones and styles, it speaks volumes to the versatility of the Coen Brothers long line of work that their series of Western parables are all distinctive to their body of work and often successful to a mixture of hysterical and devastating results. Ghost Stories Directed by Jeremy Dyson & Andy Nyman Written by Jeremy Dyson & Andy Nyman Starring Andy Nyman, Martin Freeman, Alex Lawther Synopsis: Skeptical professor Phillip Goodman embarks on a trip to the terrifying after finding a file with details of three unexplained cases of apparitions. ![]() Verdict: A uniquely British horror effort that manages to utilise the unassuming rural landscape to harbour dark secrets and true terrors that also manages to sink it’s teeth into a real crisis of masculinity. One of the true underrated gems of the year. Isle of Dogs Directed by Wes Anderson Written by Wes Anderson Starring Bryan Cranston, Koyu Rankin, Edward Norton Synopsis: Set in Japan, Isle of Dogs follows a boy's odyssey in search of his lost dog. ![]() Verdict: Flawless animation perfectly realises Anderson unbounded imagination in this suitably quaint and deadpan effort. Drawing upon a rich culture of Japan and Japanese cinema, Isle of Dogs often looks epic in scope, yet charming to all audiences. Bad Times at the El Royale Directed by Drew Goddard Written by Drew Goddard Starring Jeff Bridges, Cynthia Erivo, Jon Hamm Synopsis: Circa 1969, several strangers, most with a secret to bury, meet by chance at Lake Tahoe's El Royale, a rundown hotel with a dark past. Over the course of one night, everyone will show their true colors - before everything goes to hell. ![]() Verdict: Drew Goddard’s pulpy yawn is undeniably an exercise in excess, a smorgasbord of 60’s American and various bleak shades of morality that highlights real craft and creativity, even when it threatens to come crumbling under it’s own weight. ![]() My thoughts exactly on individuals who put Annihilation at the top. Avengers: Infinity War is a great movie and will most likely be #1 on the list. Get over it. |
