I think those guys on the panel don't really have their fingers in the physical media pie so they didn't really have any specific insight or even interest in discussing the question of 4K Bluray.

Exactly what I thought, I'm sure all the company's that have patents with Blu ray have alot of interest in new Blu ray format's succeeding. Would not make sense to completely stop that patent revenue stream.

Bitrate and size are directly related. bitrate (of all streams) x runtime = size

It allows you to use a lower bitrate (thus lower size, or lower bandwidth requirements) while maintaining the same quality. Or to use the same bitrate while increasing the quality.

x265 0.9 was released the other day, I will test it later but here are some screens from encodes I did a few weeks ago using 0.8:

It is still not ready for prime-time (there is a tendency to blur fine detail) but they are getting there, and you can clearly see how it outperforms x264 in these examples.

H.265 would give you a better picture.

It gives a Bigger Resoluton and more Pixels per square inch.

Also 4k and 8k is a part of H.265

Anyone heard what is the status of the first amendment to h.265. I know it includes extensions to HEVC to support UHD with higher frame rates, greater bit depth and higher fidelity color sub-sampling schemes. Some or all of these 4K/UHD extensions to HEVC are anticipated to be needed for the Blu-ray UHD (4K) format, such as support for 4:2:2 with 10 or 12-bit depth and frame rates up to 60 Hz. Early in 2013, it was said that the first amendment to h.265 was expected to be completed by the end of 2013, but I have not seen any official announcement out of ITU that it as been approved yet.

The range extensions amendment was completed in April but the ITU is going to wait until July to create the second version of HEVC so they can also add the scalable extensions amendment. Sony has made comments about the Main 12 profile being used in the near future. I don't know though if that means anything of if they were just stating an opinion.
