Well, maybe with enough folks asking maybe KimchiDVD will release an uncut version of First Strike on blu ray (although most likely upscaled). Regardless an uncut upscaled First Strike would still be a big improvement over a drastically cut true blu ray. Plus Kimchi usually has great packaging / artwork

Isn't KimchiDVD just a seller, not manufacturer? No point of asking them.

I would think that it would be easier for a seller to arrange an agreement to port existing blu ray discs from other countries to add english subtitles, change region codes etc. When existing blu ray do exist that is. I have a region free player now anyhow. But take something like Rintaro's Metropolis, or the Jackie Chan movies that have a true japan blu ray but with not english subtitles, I would think that they could get some negotiating rights to distribute. But that's just a thought, that the more implied 'demand' there is on the whole, the more general pressure one can put on the industry for certain ttitles

Theatrical prints were used to make those JC Japanese Extreme Blu-ray true HD editions so the movies have side-titles (burnt-in) and print damage. JC`s catalog needs a complete remaster from the original negatives with the original mono soundtracks and none of this upscale, edited, audio remix BS. You can get that version here for much cheaper.
https://www.yesasia.com/us/first-str...0-en/info.html Unfortunately it's tough to tell what version that is. The amazon.jp listing says it's 193 minutes long which is incorrect. And yesasia doesn't list a length. |

Only the Japanese DVD for First Strike is the uncut HK version but there are no English subtitles. There is an English dub in Dolby Surround but its an alternate dub without Jackie Chan’s voice.

Odd. I've got the Japanese DVD, but the audio options on the disc that has the HK cut are original language Chinese (unsure if it's Mandarin or Cantonese) or Japanese dub. And as you stated, no English subtitles.

Doh, you’re right. Cantonese and Japanese audio only. The disc is not English friendly.

The best solution I've found to this point is to use the Japanese DVD disc image paired with an English subtitle track available from one of the user-submitted subtitle websites.

You can check the run time on it, the cut version is missing close to 20 minutes. Also I think the HK DVD is OOP while you can still buy the Japan DVD

There isn’t a Blu-ray, there are two hard to find DVD options:
Taiwan release by Funny with English subtitles but is non-anamorphic widescreen and the film is broken into two parts. Japanese two-disc release by Warner without English subtitles and is also non-anamorphc widescreen. The Japanese disc has the original Cantonese/Mandarin/English/Russian mixed language dialogue but in stereo surround. The Taiwan disc has the Mandarin dub only in 5.1 surround. |
