Current copyright law takes 125 years before movies are in the public domain. At that point they don't magically appear everywhere it simply becomes legal for people to freely share them. Since it takes so long there will undoubtedly be movies that are lost because no one who cares about sharing them will have access to a copy to share by the time they are in the public domain.

Ya copyright laws are the problem not so much steaming services going out of business. When snow white enters the public domain its not like you could make a copy of the dvd or blu ray at that point and not be breaking the law. You would need to hunt down a film reel from 1937 digitize it, remaster the colors and then remaster it yourself to fix over 100 years worth of wear and tear. Even later films one hundred years from now that do have dvds your going to need to find a copy that doesnt have drm because even without a copyright you still cant legally break drm due to the digital millennium copyrights act.

I just cant see much of any films ever making it to the public domain in half decent quality. The wait is just to long and things just age to much after that much time. A book after 120 years can be copied basically perfectly but film doesn't stand a chance.

A good example of this is Paramount's film The Alamo

Quote:
In 2014, an Internet campaign was formed urging MGM to restore The Alamo from the deteriorating 70mm elements. This garnered some publicity from KENS-TV in San Antonio, and attention from filmmakers such as J. J. Abrams, Matt Reeves, Rian Johnson, Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón, and Alejandro González Iñárritu. In his 2014 biography of Wayne, John Wayne: The Life and Legend author Scott Eyman states that the full-length Toronto print has deteriorated to the point where it is now unusable.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Al...rnate_versions

Had the film entered the public domain sooner, the directors in question may have been able to help fund a restoration effort to salvage it. However, Paramount was uninterested in doing so, and with the copyright on the film still in effect, an HD master has likely become impossible.

Current copyright laws could certainly stand to be reigned in a good amount. 50 to 60 years would probably be a good standard.

Another good example would be when a show is written off as a tax write off. currently warner bros just wrote off a bunch of animation which means they can no longer show it but due to copyrights nobody else can either. Those shows are in purgatory for a hundred years at this point due to copyright with nobody able to use the show at all.

At a minimum anytime a show is written off a companies taxes it should go straight to public domain.

Personally I would say the life of the author or 40 years whichever is longer. Like you just said about 50 years has destroyed that film to the point where its unusable. I also don't think copyrights are even accomplishing what they are meant to at this point hampering the creation of new works as to much is tied down in copyrights over a 100 year period.

Mill Creek Entertainment Inks New Home Entertainment Licensing Agreement With Disney

Quote:
Mill Creek Entertainment, a division of Alliance Entertainment Holding Corporation, Jan. 30 announced it has signed a new home entertainment licensing agreement with The Walt Disney Co.

In the multiyear agreement, Distribution Solutions, a division of Alliance, will distribute select Blu-ray Disc and DVD live-action movies and television shows from the ABC Signature, 20th Television, Hollywood Pictures, Touchstone Pictures and 20th Century Studios libraries.

“Mill Creek will assume the role of vendor of record on certain existing titles,” Jeff Hayne, SVP of acquisitions and production at Mill Creek, said in a statement.

Mill Creek and Alliance have established a network of physical and e-commerce retailers nationwide, including several which feature branded proprietary fixtures for DVD and Blu-ray titles.

“We have built three great divisions to…drive sales of physical video product by incorporating Mill Creek for licensing and production, Distribution Solutions for retail and bulk distribution, and Alliance Entertainment for one-stop sales and ecommerce fulfillment,” said Jeff Walker, CEO of Alliance Entertainment.

Hopefully they release quality 4K discs, as well. Fight Club on 4K disc brought to you by...Mill Creek.

Mill Creek has never been about quality releases.

I considered doing that too and maybe I still will. It's popular but looks kind of dumb. Guess watching it would be the way to find out.

I enjoyed Into the Deep on Hulu. It's not great but it was fun.

I tried to watch Maneater (also currently on Hulu) and it was almost bearable but the special effects must have been the reason I couldn't finish it.

The best movie I have seen on streaming in a long time is "Like Someone in Love (2012)"

Amazing movie that is currently on Kanopy but I think it's leaving this month. It's from Japan so you have to be ok with subtitles to enjoy it.

It was a sort of puzzle of a movie like Knives Out and had a lot of relate-able family drama. I highly recommend it.

On Kanopy I get 6 credits a month. From now on, I'm going to just look in the section for things leaving this month to try to find things worth watching. Seems to be a great strategy.

No, PlayAsia. I'm not worried, but going from Hong Kong to Los Angeles to Hong Kong is a weird way for them to track it.

That's my concern as well. But maybe Mill Creek will up their game. There is a treasure trove of unreleased movies under the Disney umbrella.

As much as I adore Ana and like Ben, ... I couldn't finish that one. I don't even remember what it was about and that's strange because I was excited to see it.

And, I tried to watch Blonde on Netflix and couldn't finish that one either. Actually didn't get far with that one at all. Just seemed terrible.

Maybe I'll try again for the second one.

I love Ana de Armas in these great movies....

I couldn't pick a favorite .... all 3 are amazing and even better on disc with the lossless audio and reference quality video.
