Well, this came out of nowhere: Be Forever Yamato Rebel 3199

Quote:
On January 19th, it was revealed that the latest work of the remake series of the popular anime "Space Battleship Yamato" series "Yamato yo Towa ni REBEL (Level) 3199" will be produced. This is a sequel to "Space Battleship Yamato 2205 New Departure", and details will be announced in the future.

"Space Battleship Yamato" was broadcast in 1974 by the first TV anime series. "Space Battleship Yamato 2", "Farewell Space Battleship Yamato Ai no Senshi", and "Space Battleship Yamato Revival" have also been produced. "Space Battleship Yamato 2199", a remake of the first work, was screened in theaters and televised in 2012-14, and the sequel to "2199" "Space Battleship Yamato 2202 Ai no Senshi" was screened in 2017-19.

Following "2202", "Previous Chapter -TAKE OFF-" of "Space Battleship Yamato 2205 New Departure", in which Harutoshi Fukui is in charge of the series composition and screenplay, will be screened on October 8, 2021. "Later Chapter -STASHA-" will be screened on February 4th.
So a time skip a thousand years? A character from 3199? There wasn't anything like that in the original Be Forever Yamato that I recall - so who the hell knows.

Be Forever Yamato had that trip to "2402", which led to one of the dumbest plot twists I've ever seen. Here's hoping these new movies won't re-enact it exactly, except making it a more distant "future".

Really hope Funimation can get 2205 at some point considering how fast they got 2202 when it was in the middle of coming out in Japan...

Plus if there's any precedent from them getting the Date A Live and HLP movies, maybe Celestial Ark isn't an improbability either.

The Japanese release has English subtitles if you're willing to spend the cash.

Japan has only released the 4-episode Volume 1 for 2205, back in December, and the second volume is not coming out until April, so 4 months later. At that rate it will take a while to get 7 volumes out, so it's probably going to be close to a year or more yet until Funi can release it.

Sorry to necro this but 2205 is only 2 parts as far as I know. Not sure how that can affect the license since it's not a full 2 cour show but hopefully an overseas release isn't far behind (I mean, they are using the Star Blazers name in the logo now and have been for a while...)

2205 is not a 26 episode series. It was a two film duology.

The anime reviews on this site read like the writer is struggling to meet the minimum word count required for a review. The writer seems to be going down a checklist and ticking off boxes.

The 2.5 star rating appears to be for the following reasons: 1) he prefers the cel-based animation of the original to the CGI-enhanced animation of the reboot; 2) the character designs are not as "artistic" as the originals; 3) the reboot should have had a darker and grittier aesthetic; 4) the score can't compare to the original (despite it being practically a note-for-note redux of the original score by the son of the original composer); and 5) it's an unnecessary reboot of a classic series that doesn't "hold a candle" to the original.

So, basically, the 2.5 is just because he prefers the original.

Probably for the best I'm not a reviewer. I wouldn't hesitate to dock points just for digipaint.

I prefer traditional cel animation myself (I actually have some reservations about the UY reboot for that reason), but I understand that it's not really feasible today. It seems the reviewer was not a fan of the CG elements in 2199.

I suppose I can see where he's coming from. If they remade the original Macross today, and all the mecha were CG (because of course they would be), I might have a similar reaction.

The parts of the review I don't understand are the complaints about the score (2199 essentially just updates the original score) and the updated character designs not being as "artistic" as the originals (as I really liked the new designs by Nobuteru Yuki). I'm also surprised he didn't mention the addition of more female characters to the crew and the fan service, although it was not a lengthy review.

The reviewer is quite the hypocrite, as they then later praised the CG elements used in their review of Full Metal Panic: Invisible Victory which coincidentally had the same studio as 2199 (Xebec) work on the animation as well as CG elements.
